Fuel Consumption lines...

Hey, so when fiddling around and testing the fuel consumption of the car in different modes, I noticed this in the picture below. What are these lines under the bar graph representative of? I leafed through the manual but didn't find anything on it.

I just noticed it. I don't even know if it moves right with time...

I'm sure I did and more. This car is less than a month old, and I'm now starting to ride it a lot harder - rev till limiter, down shifting. I am changing modes several times per outing, using paddles and D/S mode and back to auto mode. Now that the roads are clearer, I'm really experimenting.

Do you know what those small dashed lines are representative of?

I think what he's saying is that perhaps they represent the times that you changed modes.

I don't think so. I'll try another experiment tomorrow. Might it be the amount of ASS? LOL. Or mode changes as you say.

Seem like know one knows, but I'm sure everyone who has read this has checked it on their own iDrive so its not some weird LCD glitch on my screen. Whatever it is, its meant to be there.

They don't seem to be mode changes. Today I drove with ASS off as much as I could remember. I'm still changing modes ( Sport, Sport+ and Comfort ). I didn't want Eco Pro as it might trigger ASS. The line was mostly flat.... Maybe its the number of engine starts?

It could be an indication of what the larger consumption bars are. Like a representative zoom in, but I don't know.

I'll have to check mine to see if those lines are there, don't remember seeing them, but I dont look at that screen much. I don't think it's a mode change as (if I recall) it shows that at the top of the bars.

Have you tried to change the time to a smaller unit, that may shed some light on it? I think you can get it down to an 8 minute interval or something pretty small.

No, it didn't correlate to that...

Good idea. I'll reduce the timescale and I'll get quicker feedback.

I have a new theory - perhaps those are more granular instantaneous consumption rates. If you look closely, all of the blips drop below the main line. Perhaps those are times you were accelerating from a stop or at least not running steady state. The main bar chart is obviously a trending average. For example, right around the 1 hour mark there's a blip on the lower line and the big bar is relatively short. There isn't another blip until about 3/4 of the way to the 2 hour mark. All of the big bars are trending upward during this time. Looking at the blips and bars during the first hour also seem to have a similar correlation.

It should be a pretty simple matter to test this theory. Especially if you shorten the timebase to something way less than 2 hours.

It has to do with the time scale.

If I have mine set to 8 minutes, I don't get any of those little mini bars.

If I set it to longer, they seem to appear although I couldn't put any major logic to their spacing. I tried seeing if it correlated to any action (manual shifting, changing eco modes, etc) and none of them caused a change after watching it repeatedly on my 45 minute commute.

Think it might actually just be some awkward attempt at a subdivision graphic that wasn't implemented right - but it definitely changes with the time scale.

This might be a stupid question, but how do you change the time scale? I've never seen such an option on my car...

There's a magnifying glass symbol on the left side. Select that and then rotate to select the time scale.

Anyway, I'm not going to focus on this anymore. Its just distracting me from having fun ! I drive to work for agressively for 5mins in Sport and then calm down for 5 mins in comfort and then back again etc... just to test this thing!

That's just not right! I'm going to ignore it and just drive.

Can you somebody clarify why I have no "Consumption history" icons on EfficientDynamics screen? I have "EfficientDynamics Info" and "ECO PRO Tips" only. Does it depende on some other equipment? I have 328i without NAV, with sport AT.

Those lines result from the car's internal fart detector. BMW's efficient dynamics metrics track all types of gas expenditures.

Just remembered this thread when I noticed those lines on my consumption display. Those lines at the bottom represent when the car is shut off (not by ass, but by a push of the start stop button).

Thanks! That is my thinking too, but I didn't methodically correllate it. It seems about right, but there there are different heights in there so I wasn't sure.
