Auto-Stop-Start technology. I would use it more if it weren't so harsh on our car.

I really like it. Never had a stalling problem with it in 10k miles...and I miss it when it deactivates due to cold temps.

No...I've driven rental cars in Europe with it and it sucks..BIGTIME. Maybe with a Fiat 500 it's cool but with a BMW...No way. Gas also isn't $9 dollars a gallon equivalent here so don't bother for the 1-2 mpg you might gain.

Got my new baby today and thinking I'll give it a shot.
Why not... It does feel weird tho... Especially in traffic... Like stop, and then just let go of the brakes to go for 1 second and then stop again... Wondering what it will be in winter with the heater on... :s

The real reason for A.S.S I think its for emissions. I personally told the dealer to re-program it and use it once in awhile...You really dont save much money in the long run, but it is the future in car technology...

I've driven a activehybrid 3 and the A.S.S system is 10000X better. Why?? because it uses a Starter/Generator so when the vehicle re-starts you dont get that rough start up. It pretty much uses the Generator that is driven by the crankshaft and turns the engine over. You barely feel it start up. Im pretty sure that system will work its way up to newer cars. Whats really amazing about the gen 2 activehybrids is that chances of being stuck from a bad starter is slim. There are 3 starters in that car. 1 is your conventional starter, 2 is your starter/generator and 3rd is the E-machine motor/starter...

I know im off topic.. but just FYI for whoever is thinking about getting a Activehybrid....

Can you go into more detail regarding the 3 starters? I knew about #3, wasn't sure about #1, and this is the first I've heard of #2.

Hated it. Took it to the dealer last week, and after a few programming issues, got it back today and it's OFF now. Made about 8 stops today and no more turning it off each and every time. I had it on the X3 loaner too... thinking I might tolerate it there more, but no way. At times it was just rough... letting off the brake and it would actually slightly jerk the car a bit... can't be good off and on many times in just one trip of driving, then daily... anyway, love it off and I will leave it OFF!

It sux. Gave it a chance for 1,000 miles. Still sucks as much as the day I got it. Trying to get the dealership to deactivate it is like pulling teeth though!

Dealer has to do it for you, Trigger. BMW issued a PUMA to give customer one time free programming to remember last ASS setting. They should not be giving you a hard time. Have them refer to SIB 12 15 12.

I did. Left my car at the dealership on Wednesday. They gave it back to me saying their software was not up to date since they just got the new software CD on Monday. They do the system upgrades over the weekend so I have to bring it back again on wednesday next week. They had the gall to blame it on me, saying my car was too new!!

I tried to get them to do it when my car came in but they said it cannot be done when you take delivery!

Maybe it's just my dealership. I should probably shop around.

I gave it a chance for 2,000km - and then got dealer to do the ASS "remember last setting"

I may use it occasionally, but it was quite noticeable.......

Garage List
I don't mind it overall. I always turn it off when I'm in stop and go traffic because it's super annoying then but in city traffic at stop lights I don't mind it at all. It also turns off when I kick it to manual mode on sport + anyway so no need to turn it off. I had to get the update tho since it would stall every other time it kicked in before I got the update. At times the startup is a little harsh but most of the time it's pretty smooth and sometimes not noticeable. Give it a chance and if you hate it have them code it.

WHAAAAT? Damn, my stealership lied to me then! They said you cannot get ASS reprogrammed at time of pickup. You're lucky.

I had mine reprogrammed prior to delivery. If I want it to be back on I just push the button and it stays on.

Told 'em to set it to "Remember last setting" so that I can play with it, and then just leave it off if I want.

Probably would use it but not during run in nor short trips. On my test drive i didnt see anything wrong with it. Dealer may have been using 98 octane which may have better restarting characteristics

Hmm... the ASS works best in a manual. I've had no issues. It stops the engine when, oh I don't know, want it? It's great in long stop lights, and it's not intrusive at all. I guess you get that much better control in a manual. Oh, and it helps restart the engine when you accidentally stall it
