Fender Gap
I'm sure this has been mentioned before, but the other day I was thinking about how I hear of more BMW owners lowering their cars than any of the other German automakers.
Then when I was pricing out a new 3-series, I noticed that the front fender flare is actually higher than the rear. Then I looked at the rest of the BMW lineup, and all of them have larger and taller front wheel wells than rear. Might be a possible explanation for why so many BMW owners complain about huge fender gap. |

The fender gap is larger in the front because the tires turn within the wheel well and when going over bumps you would rub against the fender if they were the same gap. And just as a side note, I agree that BMW owners lower they're cars a lot, but Volkswagen owners modify their cars more often and to greater extents than just about any car company. There are probably mor lowered jettas than all lowered BMWs haha

Just by shear sales numbers I think VW has more lowered cars. BMW probably has the highest ratio of lowered cars to stock cars.

Every one complains about fender gap, then they lower their car and wonder why they have to roll their fenders or have chunks being taken out of their tires. That's just how suspension and steering work.
In general, you'll see a larger fender gap on cars that have them even, or a staggered wheel setup where the front wheel is smaller like on most sports cars.

Anyone else think BMWs are sitting higher which each new generation?
E46s look lower than the E90s which look lower than the F30s. I have an E92 x-drive but visually it seems lower than most of the F30s I see, but a good inch or so higher than non x-drive E90/92s. |
