Is this part necessary? Rear Bumper conversion

I'm going to change the rear bumper of my F36 from SportLine to mtech, the thing is that I don't know if this part is necessary, I've seen it in several videos but I don't understand its function.
I would like to know if I could fit the bumper and diffuser with the OEM part that comes with the normal bumper, at least until I order the new part if it is necessary 100%.

Look up both bumpers at realoem.com. You can then compare the part numbers of the affiliated parts.
