Rattle and Squeak

So my 2012 328i is starting to develop both a squeak and a rattle from the middle to right section of the dashboard. I am pretty bummed out , its only got 350 miles on it.

I going to take to a dealer this weekend, but wanted to know if you guys have any advice before I go.

Thanks!

Btw... They won't be able to fix
It... They will probably tell you it's normal... Or that you're hearing things... Good luck man!

Well, see... I took the dashboard apart and drove it around to see if it may be the trim.. Unfortunately that's not the case.. I think it's either the head up display, but Im more incline towards something on the Steering column...

I think my squeak is coming from the center. Around the cup holders.

Yeah... It like comes from the middle of the dashboard... My service advisor told me it was probably coins the first time lol... I left it alone after that... I got used to it... My exterior mirrors don't dim when cars shins have high beams on...

i have 2013 328i xdrive, 3 weeks old with 700 miles on it. Same noise. I figured out it's coming from under the gear selector portion of middle console. You can somewhat pinpoint it by feeling the vibrations when it comes on if you place your hand on top of it. Not sure what to do about it. Anyone tried to get it corrected at the dealer?

A lot of people are getting center dash rattle resolution by putting felt tape around the base of the display where it mounts on the dash.

Got it fixed! Woohoo! Supper happy. There was a loose bracket and they padded the dash with sound deadening material. Very happy with the result!!!

They fixed pretty much every noise. Only a little bit of wind noise left on the drivers side.

My 2012 (May 2012 build) has a couple of noises that definietly sound more like squeaks than rattles:

1) Driver's door near dash
2) Center console near cupholder area
3) Headliner (somewhere in the center of the roof)

They are intermittent so I haven't thought to bring them in just yet but if one stays more constant I'll definitely be bringing it in.

The one thing I've noticed in this car (more than any car I've ever owned) is the eerie "creaking" noise that occurs when getting in the car on a hot day and turning on the AC. Its almost as if the dash is expanding and contracting with the quick change in temperature. Its not loud but it just sounds like the dash is making noise in various places. It stops after about 30 seconds but its strikes me as weird everytime.

I should say though that none of the above has lessend my impressions of this awesome machine!

I agree...I notice this every time I turn on the AC.

rattle in center console

my 2013 328 xdrive spent 2 days at the dealer. The rattle in the center console supposed to be fixed. They had to take apart the hole console including exhaust system for some reason. Some hose was a millimiter too long and was vibrating against the body of the car.
I also had squicking noises in the dash when going over large pot holes, especially at slower speeds, in a turn. They said they put some tape in places to make it go away. I will drive the car next week, so will see if the noises are gone.

Hopefully its gone now. Mine is mostly silent now... only hear somethings when going over really rough roads.

I seem to get trim squeaking from the back seats around the doors when the car flexes. Wonder if the dealer can fix this.

I can help with that one. If you push in/out/in/out on the sliding moonroof shade just at the handle you'll hear the squeak. Something metal-on-metal is rubbing what must be a spring or damper where the shade meets the frame.

Next time I'm in for service, I'll have them remove it, add some tape or felt, and that'll be that. Slide the shade open, the sound will disappear, a decent short-term fix.

There is a silicone spray which helps to eliminate rattles. Ask your Service Advisor.

I do hope my F30 does not rattle. Our roads in the UK are terrible and no car + driver is immune from being shaken to death. But funnily, my Mk6 GTI is more or less rattle free. I think it was shaken so much, that everything fell into place! Oh, I always have the Adaptive Suspension on 'Comfort' and this is fantastic. Otherwise, I would stop driving the car as it would become a health hazard.

Thanks for the tip...tried it last night but it sounds like its perhaps further back than the sunroof. It was actually quite loud last night and though I've been trying to be a good sport about BMW's and rattles its becomming hard to ignore. The driver's door rattle was also pretty bad last night as well so might be time to take it in while its easy to identify for the service guys. Will see.
