HOA meetings?
I moved into a townhome and the board is voting to delegate funds instead of having a general pool of money. This idea sounds fine but multiple members have asked me to vote so I always wonder what's in it for them.
This is my first meeting as I just moved in. |

Plus it's all townhomes so there are a lot of common areas to worry about so hopefully they follow the rules here. |

Let me rephrase we vote and seems to be unanimously agreed upon to do x. Then the leaders of the hoa do y instead. Bunch of passive aggressive bullshit out of members.

The Los Angeles Times has a great HOA q&a column. Worth researching some archived stories.
This link should bring up some past stories. http://www.latimes.com/search/dispat...t=all&spell=on Last edited by overcoil; 11-13-2016 at 03:24 PM.. |

I ignore our HOA whenever possible and they leave me alone after I shouted at a couple of the board members for separate issues. I'm happy with the current arrangement.

Our HOA successfully voted to transform our neighborhood into a gated community several years ago. I was vehemently against it because gates are needlessly cumbersome in my opinion.
The prevailing opinion was that a gated community would improve safety, but I think that's hogwash. Our neighborhood is one of the most affluent neighborhoods in the nation with a median household income just north of $400,000/year. There's effectively 0 crime here, and a gate is arguably an invitation to would be criminals more than it is a deterrent. I'm kept "in the loop" through e-mails that usually go to my junk folder, but other than that I don't actively participate in our HOA anymore. |

My HOA is a fucking waste of money. They sent me a notice saying I had to powerwash my house (which wasn't bad compared to other people in the neighborhood), so I washed it, did the drive way and street even in front of the house. Got a notice like two weeks after saying I had to powerwash the house? Emailed them saying they were delusional because it was already done two weeks prior..., never got an email back.

Second house was in a neighborhood with HOA, I went to a meeting...big mistake I ended up on the board, even though I told them I did not want to be on the board. It was a joke. Then when I got the divorce a year later, they were shocked that I was no longer going to be on the board as I moved across town :-O
The new subdivision was worst than the last. I almost ordered a decal that looked like my garage door was open to place on my garage door just to F*&^ with them, but I did not. We just built a house in a new subdivision and our builder was new and did not get the HOA's 100% approval prior to building. They made us change a few things on the plans that ended up costing me $5k, still not a fan of HOA's. I am pretty sure they also hate me Steve |

I go to all of mine but only because they provide food and beer/ wine.
Only thing my HOA ever discusses at the meetings is where and when we will have a neighborhood rager. |

I can't ever see myself buying a SFH tied to an HOA. Their usefulness exists only in a fantasy world fueled by NIMBYism.

Here's a good one I was representing my aunt at a HOA board meeting, I was invited. And some 80 year old 5'3" Jewish guy president of the board wanted to start a physical fight with me.
Now that 80 year old is like 95 and vegging due to a brain aneurysm. Now when I ask him if he wants to fight? he drools all over himself. |

Take the example of my dog - he'll be drooling in 10 seconds flat if I have something he wants. You've made this poor guy wait a whole 15 years for the privilege of fighting you - course he's going to drool when you offer. What did you expect?? |

I made very certain that wherever my parents moved, the HOA wasn't gonna bitch at us for me working in my car in the garage. I wonder how my air compressor/impact wrench would be...

I went. It was old people bitching about bushes, sod, and wasp in their bushes.
Kinda of a sad place to be. I can vote ahead of time so I am never going back. It's easier for me to spray a wasp nest then wait 3 months until the next HOA meeting. |

My first time in an HOA. We don't have them up North.
I like the fact that I don't have to cut my grass and the neighborhood stays neat. It was a little more paperwork when time came to put up my fence but it's a small price to pay for not having people that want to paint their house pink or other ugly shit. It's a bit limiting to some people but I haven't had a problem yet, I work on and wash my cars whenever I want and I made sure there was nothing against it before I bought. The Meetings are a bitch fest, I don't bother going. |
