2015 F36 heater woes
Hi all,
I got my F36 with MPK installed via dealer in January 2015. I began noticing this current winter season that my heater doesn't seem to be working correctly (pretty sure this wasn't the case when I first got it). I have the heating set as follows: - Temp 74 deg F on both sides - Auto mode with A/C off - Rotary vent dial set on full heat For context, the car is kept in an attached, non-heated garage. For my morning commute today for example, prior to leaving the house, the garage interior was about 55 deg (it was really warm the night before), with cabin temperature (via an accurate ambient thermometer) of 60 deg, and the outside temp was about 30 deg. My commute is about 25 min of mostly highway speed driving. At the end of my commute, the cabin interior temperature was 58-59 deg (less than when I started!). If it's helpful to know, at this point the coolant temp from dash gauge has moved up 1 small tick from baseline. At around 10 minutes of driving the blower will kick in, and it will put out moderately warm air transiently, but then you can feel the air temp kick back down when by any subjective account it is still cold inside. By comparison, I drove a rental from my dealer (2015 335), and the thing was blasting heat and I was getting toasty by 5-10 min of driving. I've had it to the dealer, and by their diagnostics they don't see a problem. It apparently is capable of putting out hot enough air when set to max temp on manual (in fact this is what is typed as a fix to the problem on the service invoice), and they say the interior temperature sensors are not faulty, and that all the internal vents/flaps are OK However, to me, it seems like a control or logic issue, where the car for some reason is not putting out a high enough volume of maximally hot air to achieve the set temperature. Anyone have any thoughts or similar experience? Specific questions I have: - Could it have anything to do with M power kit? Any reason why the mod or ECU flash could affect the heating in this way? - In the spring I had a stone fly in and put a hole in my a/c condenser, so that needed to be replaced. Could there be a link here? - I'm taking the car back to the dealer, with some video documentation of the temp discrepancy as I outlined above. Any further advice on how to get them to recognize the problem and/or figure it out? If they continue to push back, should I demand they re-flash the ECU? Thanks for reading all this, much appreciated |

The 3L V6 you say?
Honestly sounds like something is wrong with the heater. It should not get colder in the cabin. Have the dealer test the temp coming from the vents. There should be an acceptable range. Then have them look under the hood and figure out how to get you the right motor. This could effect your heater. |

Don't think the MPK has to do with the problem, could it be some wrong with evaporator?

I asked for the V6 but the salesman told me those were for the real BMW customers, and that wasn't me. (dammit)
It is unlikely the MPPK is the problem, although they flash the computer which resets to defaults on a lot of settings, so anything is possible. But I have it and my heater is working fine. What happens when you turn on defrost and let it run on full for 10 minutes after the car is warm ? Mine will cook my monkey and I have to turn it down.

My '14 335i is fully warm in 10-15 minutes of driving. Mornings have been around 30-35 F around here the last few days.
If yours is not warming up in 30 minutes, and the coolant temp has only moved a "tick", just take it back. It's wrong. You proved it with loaner (rental) warming up faster. Back in the day, it would be a mechanical thermostat stuck open...who knows what it could be now! If they can't fix it, hopefully can find another nearby dealer. P.S. Do you have heated seats? To me, these are so damn toasty, I have to turn them off after a couple minutes! |
