exhaust tip care

How are you guys exhaust tips holding up? I've had the car for 4 days and my right one is already showing a decent amount of black sut on the inside at least. A neighbors e90 335 has completely black sut-full pipes...

I have mothers aluminum polish and eagle never dull standing by, but curious on how those with more miles on their cars' tips are holding up..... strangely my wifes Jetta TDI with 15K miles has sparkling clean tips.

I have been using neverdull. But they never stay clean for more than a day or so. The neverdull works great though...cleans them up good as new.

I just gave up. My Sport Line has black tips, and they're just matte black now. Also, there are black splatter marks all over the rear bumper; these won't wash off. But honestly, I don't really care. I might wrap the diffuser part anyways.

I removed the exhaust valve clip so they both dirty up almost evenly.

Soot, not "sut". Just clean them whenever you wash the car.

Another +1. Nothinig special. Just wash and wipe. Guess it depends on how often you do it though.

Well i think that goes w/o saying. I was more seeing if waiting until you wash it to clean it was acceptable or if its something you have to do like every few days. From the looks of the posts and how frequently i wash my car, I'm excited that it's simple.

I've had other cars that were not so much.

another + 1. i have a microfiber towel i dedicate for the exhaust tips and just wipe them down after each car wash. i find that does the trick for the most part.

+1. Get a clean microfiber towel that has been damped with wheel cleaner (non-acidic) and wipe away. Hell, you can get away with warm water if they're maintained properly.

I have the 328, so just the single muffler with 2 exhaust tips. Never having cleaned them, I've noticed that one of tips has considerably more soot on it than the other. The other day, while I fired up the engine to let it warm up while cleaning snow off the windows, I noticed that at idle, pretty much all the exhaust gas is coming out the "more sooted" tip.

So is this by design, so that at idle or under low engine load, all the exhaust gas is coming out of that one tip, and during higher load, both tips are used for exhaust?

Yup! exactly the second exhaust valve opens at around 2500 rpm, BMW did that to reduce exhaust sound when idling. If you open all your windows you can hear the second valve close when slowing to a stop.

For all my cars in the past, I just use Never Dull.

http://www.eagleone.com/nevr-dull-wadding-polish

It'll get it off no problem.
Hope this helps.
