Never heard that before. Yes, they err on the side of caution and as your tyres wear, your speed becomes less accurate but a figure of 6% seems plucked out of the air to me (and wildly inaccurate compared to real world tests!) and "for insurance"? What does that even mean?

157mph on a deserted Autobahn on my way back to Munich.

I wouldn't dream of hitting those speeds on any US highway. You guys are nuts!

There are many smooth desolate roads in the Western US where you can wring it out. Eastern US has far less but they are out there. Lived in KY, TX, ID, OK, GA, VA, FL, WA, NC....just gotta find them at the right time of day (or night).

Just accidentally hit 108mph this morning...this thing is too fast.
I can't wait to for a Flash that removes the limiter too!

595MPH.

I had it shipped over on a jet while I sat in the driver's seat and that's the speed the plane was flying.

LOL. Kidding!

You hit 108mph and you want to remove the limiter? LOL

I think 160 is the fastest that I trust this car with for now. above that I start worrying about tyres and I felt changes with the wind at that speed.

It is pulled out of the air, as is the rational. (A BJ acolyte apparently).

The built in speedometer error has nothing to do with insurance. Rather, there is a EU regulation which mandates speedometers do not read low, with draconian consequences for the manufacturer for violations. Thus, European vehicles read optimistically (the odometer is typically accurate).

For whatever reason, BMW chooses a tad over 3% high. Ducati chooses 8% high as this is half way between zero and the maximum allowed 16% high. Ducati's odometers are dead-on however.

The 250 KPH (155 MPH) limiter is voluntary on BMW's part.

As an aside, the limiter is triggered by RPM and not indicated speed. Thus, a BMW will display a higher speed than 155 MPH prior to ignition and fuel cut.

You hit 160?!?!

LOL, very true, but isn't it truly american to WANT to not have any GOVERNMENT controlled speed limiter

Seriously though, I'd need much stickier tires than these stock ones, and a tighter suspension, the stock base suspension is a little too soft for big speeds on a hwy...

+1

I have been commuting to Germany 1-2 per month for work over the last 3 years, and I tend to take full advantage on the autobahn in the non-restricted areas. (when the rental car is decent).

BUT 150 mph in the US? Forget about fines... If you get busted you will be cuffed and arrested here in NY.

Yeh I have slightly stickier tires than stock (hankook v12) and some suspension work (H&R sport springs) which works well with the Adaptive M suspension.

At 160 car felt like it could do more but it was the week I got the tires and did not check speed rating so I backed off, speed rating end up being 168mph. Also I hit a section where there was no more high walls and started feeling the wind from the sides. I would like to find some good replacements for the adaptive M one day.

115 the day I got it. I was driving it home from a dealer 4 hours away, had about 10 minutes to go and was crossing a bridge between Iowa and Illinois (cops can't sit on bridges and there aren't many turn-arounds within a mile of either side for some reason). Trucks were in the fast lane in front of me and I had some lady in a Honda Pilot just RIDING my butt as we drove 65 waiting for the turtles to pass each other. So towards the bottom of the bridge, the trucks move into the slow lane and I downshift from 6th to 3rd and just pounded through the gears. I was more enjoying seeing myself pull farther and farther away from the pilot in the rear view mirror that when I finally looked at the speedo, it was at 115 mph. It definitely didn't feel like I was going that fast. So awesome.

135mph running against a b7 s4. It felt very solid, but I think my e90 328i sport felt a little better at high speeds. The e90 I had that up to 145 and I let it off.

Only bad part about this is BMW speedo's are way off. Mine is off by 3 mph. I believe this is a known fact, at 75mph I used my garmin and it said 72mph so imagine how much more off it is at 140mph.

I tested up to 100mph and it was still a constant 3mph so it read 97mph

I have no reason to tell stories. Nothing to lie about or gain from. I have a had a few bikes in my days had a ton of fun with those. Also had a 720hp 2004 mustang cobra and had that thing at some crazy speeds.

But nothing felt as good as my BMW's at high speed. Next time Ill take a picture of the HUD Im sure other even higher end cars feel even better at 150 plus but I havent had the pleasure of being behind the wheel of one. Ive driven a 911s 996 but never over 80mph...

I think the sweet spot is around 145mph, car feels very stable and you can hit 145 without realizing that you are going that fast. braking feels good too and lane change control still feels good. Even in the wet still feels confident.
