I've got a 320D ED with just over 3000 miles on the clock.

50mph driving on a quiet motorway Glasgow to Edinburgh gives me 68 to 70.4mpg (although have been called a Vicar).
Short runs are giving me around 62mpg. I use Fuelly when filling up and so far the onboard computer doesn't seem too far out- recorded average over 500 miles was 68.2 using Fuelly!

Great figures there Chris

What sort of range does that equate to per tank? Must be over 800?

Wow Chris that is good advert for the BMW ED team that's very cheap running costs in deed, welcome as well

I refilled at 760- tank is supposed to be 12.5 so 850 should be possible.

Working from home reduces consumption more than anything. Besides doing less miles in the first place:-
a) I miss rush hour
b) When I do drive I just take my time and enjoy it now!

I'm also lucky in having most of the motorways in central Scotland within a couple of miles from the house- I dread going on some of the city's busier "A" roads and going nowhere!

Thanks Derek! The economy was probably the main factor that made buying an easy decision- it was clinched by getting an ex-Olympic fleet car which has more toys than I could ever have afforded to spec myself!

Hi all I posted a while back just before getting the car, quick update as to the figures I'm getting:

Over my usual route of 620 miles of m25 driving with about 20-30 miles of London driving in moderate to heavy traffic I'm averaging 63 mpg obc which equates to 59.7 brim to brim. It does seem to be improving by 1 mpg per tank and I'm pretty impressed given its been freezing cold and I've only done 1600 miles so far.

Further info: I normally set the cruise at 77 and the beginning of my commute is on some back roads so it gets a bit of heavy footing round there.

Is this similar to others?

68-70mpg is great! I'm now getting round the 40mpg mark but that's mainly the result of little or no town driving and most of my journeys being over 20 miles.

Had the car now for 2.5 weeks - Brand new ED with sports auto.
On a recent trip 160 mls round trip on the motorway my OBC was showing 68.8mpg - this was in eco pro mode going 70mph all the way the external temp was 1c.
The car was driving itselfs 95% of the time as I have active cruise control.
Really happy with this and should get better once the diesel engine loosens up.

Just as a point to add to the poster getting 68-70 by doing 50 mph. I think you've totally missed the point, obviously it costs about 20 grand more for a brand new 3 series versus a nearly new car that could average over 50 to te gallon. So this is not an exercise in saving money and if you're driving around at 50 to get 70 to the gallon then in my book that's a false positive.

The point about this car and the thing that really impresses is the ability to do 70 or 80 and get late fifties to early sixties to the gallon. Example is my trip to Scotland this weekend all motorway current obc average 64.5 real average 61.7 mpg. This is easy to achieve and is the only sort of figure the reader should be believing. I think it's disingenuous and misleading to say otherwise because is never going to happen in real life

Pet peeve of mine.

Just did London to EuroDisney return on one tank of fuel (about 560 miles) with 4 in the car and a full boot. I prob would of got better mileage if I wasn't driving so quickly on the toll motorway to Paris. I've never managed to get anywhere near to the official values, for me its just too painful to drive slow to save a few bob.

Agreed. I've just visited scotland - done nearly 1480 miles in 4 days with an avg of 61-62 mpg. Filled the tank twice. Used Comfort and Sport most of the time and cruise control in eco mode. Never put my foot away from the accltr

I post an observation... it is not intended to bash the ED mpg figures. But these 60+ mpg figures are not so far advanced than what I was achieving 10 - 15 years ago in a VW B5 Passat saloon and estate, using the 1.9 TDI engines. I'd be driving quite regularly between Wiltshire and the Highlands and getting over 60mpg each trip without eco driving. Keeping up the pace, overtaking, etc.

I remember one trip from home down to Warwick Services, (about 400 miles) OBC was reading over 68mpg. And that was not driving at 50mph, but at legal road speeds. OBC was pretty much on the figure, when brim to brim checking.

OK, the BMW is more powerful, similar weight and size, with better emission controls, but cruising at motorway speeds we don't really seem to have moved much in mpg in real terms, even with all the 'eco' aids.

Hi Pete, I would agree with you I've heard good things about the VAG 1.9 tdi and 2.0 in 138 ps tune. The killer for me was being able to spec an auto box with a super efficient engine so a VW/AUDI was out of the frame for me.

62 mpg is good enough for me, I did have some concerns that I could be looking at low 50s economy for a 320d which I would be pretty unhappy with. I also figure that the minus temperatures and low mileage in my situation mean it's pretty much the worst case scenario and that the car will improve (though I don't expect massively).

No the 1.9 tdi VAG was a great engine, the 2.0tdi is a pile of crap. They struggle to get better than 40mpg with very careful driving, and consume a pint of oil every few thou.....the official Audi come back on the oil usage.......apparently because 138hp is a 'high performance engine'

Not everyone can get good figures out of a car, even when supposedly driving economically.

In real terms the ED will run rings around most cars, even at 'keeping up with the traffic speeds', see below, my old passat 1.9tdi would never get near that.

This isn't an ED, but shows what a the 2.0D engine can do. Note average speed of 65mph, this is winter driving from a cold start and a bit of congestion on the motorway.

The real benifits of the car are 109 Co2 - which is 13% BIK tax - for me is a real money saver.
I would have paid £30-£40 per month more if I went for a comparable A4 163 bhp TDIe model.

Also they lease so well (price wise) as until recently the lease companies could offset certain tax on sub 110 Co2 which brought down lease costs.

I went for the ED due to its tax efficiency and at the press of a button "Sport" it turns into a normal 320d IMHO.

I would just like better alloys!!

I've got a 320d ED with 5500 on the clock so far and it can't be better by anything else I've had in the past. Filled up on Sunday night, this week I've been to Birmingham and back home to the north east with just over half a tank left. Then I went to Carlisle then down to manchester and back home. I've got 785mile on the trip and 32 mile range left in the tank. Driving on the cruise as much as possible between 68 to 75 generally.

My driving is 99% Town driving with work about 5 miles away, to give you an idea... Had the car a month and started with 37mpg, currently getting around 42mpg. Not bad at all for town driving. As it's now warming up, it may get better....

Does everyone disable the ASS? It has it's uses at times, but find it annoying at junctions and roundabouts.

If you are at a junction and you want the car to restart before you need to move off just give the steering wheel a little tug.

MPG

On a 120 mile run last week keeping at a steady 70-75MPH in Ecopro mode i averaged 71MPG according to the fuel computer. My 320ED has now done 10,000 miles and the MPG has got better over the last couple of months, maybe that is down to the engine loosening up or the ambient temperature getting warmer.
