ok... fair enough if it's just the wind direction affecting your particular vehicle. Just wait and see how your door adjustment goes.

For the top B-pillar sound leak, you don't need to drive. Just park you car on the side of a busy road. You'll see, errrr ... hear what I mean. In the beginning I was constantly checking to see if my windows are completely shut.

Yes you do. You will hear the outside noises from a parked F10 as well (even slightly more than in an F30). However, when driving, the F10 has a negligible amount of B-pillar whooshing whereas the F30 is plagued by it.

True. I'll rephrase: you don't necessarily need to drive. If you do it, do it at your own risk

I've only had it up to 100-110 for short periods. I'm paranoid about getting thrown in jail with my car getting impounded, so the usual cruise speeds for Interstate driving are 80-85.

So you are saying you do not have any whooshing wind noise to your left (around the top of B-pillar) at 85 mph?

I've got a question for someone who does not have any road noise... does the inner window seal (marked by the red rectangle) in your car make contact with your window? A really easy test is to see if you can slide a sheet of paper in there.
Mine doesn't. I think there is some contact made in the recess that the window slots into (the border is indicated by the green arrows). But it seems to be deep in there. Since the seal highlighted in the rectangle is sculpted, seems to me that it is intended to be functional - yet it doesn't seem to perform any function on any of my windows. Thanks in advance!

Somewhat good and disturbing update. This dealer (which is affiliated w corporate and not a franchise) undertook some tests and were discussing findings w bmw tech. They said they are looking at several avenues but want my car back for a few days. They will have to provide a loan car.
So good in that they acknowledge there is an issue... Unlike the franchise owned service centres. Bad in that they will keep my car and flog it how they like. When i chat face to face in an hr i will try to find out more abt their tests. |

Discovered something today: wind noise on the passenger side is worst than on my drivers side. Since I have freakishly long arms, I was able to reach across and put pressure on the top rear corner of the passenger side window. By doing this, my wind noise on that side was almost completely gone. I've tried doing it on the drivers side, but I can't get enough force against it since I'm sitting so close to it, however, with the little bit of force that I can apply to it, it does have some reduction in noise. This confirms to me that MY wind noise is definitely a seal issue. My car goes in Wednesday, so I will report this to them. Hopefully, this is something that can be adjusted and corrected. I am very optimistic about this finding. Now we'll see if they can fix it. I'll keep you posted.

Unfortunately their language was a little over-exciting. They didn't do any special tests that day. What they did do was acknowledge there was an issue & make a commitment that they will fix the problem.
To me, attitude is the most important attribute. If they acknowledge & commit to fixing the problem, then I will be one satisfied customer. It is a shame that the franchise owned service centres don't have this attitude. It could also be this one particular service guy at BMW Sydney. In any case, they want to keep my car for at least 3 days and have their top service foreman, service rep himself, and the service manager all drive the car. They said they will reinforce seals, replace seals or other sound proofing etc until they get a result. They saw my photo of me taping the edges of the windows and said they may even resort to that tactic as well to isolate the problem. They acknowledged that it was embarrassing the lengths I went to in order to make the car quieter and that this should not happen on such an expensive vehicle. FINALLY !!!! Someone at BMW has acknowledgde the freakin obvious on this issue! Hallelujah! They said it's not right to be taping up gaps on the vehicle and said they would like to see the problem solved and remove all my sound proofing by the end of their investigation. So... all I left with was confidence that their mindset was right on this issue. The only soundproofing that they said they would leave was the wheel arches. As for the window seals, I think you are onto something. No-one with a "quiet" car has responded to my question earlier about the inner seal making contact with the window. I have a strong feeling this an area that is causing the issue in all of our cars. When I saw some other F30's it looked as though on some that the inner seal was making contact. Wish there was a station wagon I could have looked at in the showroom as I "believe" they are not made in South Africa but Germany. I'm 99% sure. Just for the record, I would characterise the window seal issue as a road noise than wind noise since on quiet surfaces there is considerably less noise... but in the end who gives a toss as long as we have a thread where we can all share our progress :-P

Surprise surprise, the car was much quieter. As you can see from the pics, I ensured the foam was snug right up to the window... so definitely a seal issue. It is unexpected that the window seals were the problem in my case considering on my car the window fits right into the recess. My betting money is on the cause being the exposed section of the inner seals not making contact (red arrows indicating the section outside the recess that the window slots into) Just an edit on a previous post of mine: BMW Sydney also had the head BMW tech at the dealership at the time my car was in and agreed there was an issue. Lucky me! (but still wish the franchise dealerships didn't give me the "within spec" BS)
