Don't Use K&N Oil Filter PS-7014

Don't use the K&N PS-7014 Oil Filter kit! It includes an incorrectly shaped large O-ring for the Oil Filter Cover.

According to the K&N online catalog and the Walmart catalog, the PS-7014 is the correct oil filter for this car.

This morning a neighbor, who also has a 13 335i, asked me to help him chase down an oil leak around his Oil Filter housing.

He purchased the kit at the Walmart and installed in mid Feb of 2017. Within a couple of weeks of install he noticed a small amount of oil collecting on the oil filter housing. He checked the torque of the housing cover which was at spec. Cleaned up oil thinking he may have spilled some during the change. He monitored over the next several weeks during which time it repeated and was progressively getting worse.

This morning he decided to perform an oil and filter change to further trouble shoot the issue as he was now about a qt low and something was causing the leak. When we removed the oil filter cover and filter, once the torque was broken, the cover easily hand-spun off. That is abnormal as the OEM and Mann HU-816X oil filter cover O-rings always create a very snug fit.

Upon removing the K&N O-ring, it was apparent the leak was caused by it’s incorrect cross-section shape. It is flat on the sides (oval) whereas the OEM rings are uniformly round. Thereby, oil was being blown by the K&N O-ring when the oil system was pressurized.

I've sent this and pics to K&N tech support.

Sigh... why not just use a genuine BMW or OEM oil filter. I doubt it's that much more expensive than a K&N kit?

Actually, OEM from the Dealer here is $21.00 while the K&N PS-7014 is $13.xx at the local Walmart.

i always use either the OEM from the dealer or the MANN HU-816X (OEM supplier) from a parts store.

Debating OEM vs aftermarket was not the purpose of the post. I was just trying to give others a heads-up of the potential issue my neighbor encountered.

I just checked the local Advanced Auto Parts and their K&N- 7014 contained the correct O-ring. I'll check Walmart later today or tomorrow to see if this was just an anomaly or Walmart received a bad run from K&N

Isn't 816X for the recalled plastic housing, the aluminium housing should use 816ZKIT?

The HU-816z-Kit is not for my 2013 335i. The HU-816x is what is listed by Dealer, MANN and the auto parts stores. I've have the Aluminum housing.

What is different about the 816 z-kit? I can't find any info.

Actually I did more digging, it's specific for the N20/26 it seems, and the RWD variant. Basically a 816X with an oil plug, since RWD N20/26 uses plastic oil plugs. Same filter.

My bad, I didn't see it's about the 335i.

The k&N one filters less shit into your engine for minimal gains in power not worth it

Good to know and thanks for sharing. I just changed my oil this past weekend and considered the K&N, but didn't find a filter for an N26. In the end I went with a Mann filter. Glad I stuck with OEM and I guess I will continue to do so.

HUH?

I have used the PS-7014 for the last 3 oil changes and never a problem with the O ring. Did you happen to try and reuse the old one and have a leak? Each filter change you need to use the new O ring or else then you will have issues but if you do I don't see why you would have a leak. I never have.

Don't think so. He said he changed both O-rings and the O-ring did not looked as if it was deformed, but a uniform oval shape.

I made the same mistake using this type of filter. It started to leak around the O ring and when I tried to take the filter out it broke apart and the bottom was stuck inside the filter housing. I will never use anything but OEM. It’s not worth the headache.

I have always used Mann but just wanted to add the data point. Amazon has the 816x for 10. I think the 816ZKit is also 10.

FCP has the HU-816x for $7.95 plus free ship if total order is more the $49. Looks like Amazon is $10.79 with free ship if order more than $25 or if you have Prime.
