I've wondered about break in and Euro Delivery... You aren't really going to drive like grandma over there are you?

Thats my question too, and besides that some place I saw it was mentioned that this break in requirement was put on the window sticker. I went through both the copies of my window sticker and each and every sticker that was on the car but could not find any such mention, atleast in a new 328i.

After my purchases, the sales guy went over all the fancy stuff with the car, he did not even mention about the break-in period. He told me how to pop the hood, how to get the car towed, how to check oil level, how to check for service messages etc. So, I guess break-in would have been part of his orientation if it were so important.

But still, keeping fingers crossed. Guess you would have seen my other thread.

I drove my 320i hard and ramped up the rpms on the highway like no tomorrow. Drop down a few gears repeatedly to change the vacuum pressure in the heads. You dont want to drive the car soft since your only getting one shot at sealing those piston rings. Higher compression allows them to seat properly and ensures optimal vacuum. Without it you'll end up with an oil burner.

I changed my oil at 11,000km and i had exactly 4.7l in the crankcase. I get 780km a tank now and iam 12,000km in. No complaints.

I've been told by a couple of older guys who have driven performance vehicles to drive it in the break in period like ill actually be driving the car as a future day-day basis.

They were talking about after time, a ridge will develop in the piston and if you drive it slow and baby it, the moment you drive fast it could hurt the engine.

Any thoughts on this?

I beat the crap out of mine, honestly doesn't bother me one way or another. A: Its a lease. B: always been told by the engine builders to break it in like your going to drive it. I broke in my civic engine straight on the Dyno.

I think it's pretty obvious that people who advocate a hard break-in are leasing the car For other: stick to the manual...
