BMW and Apple integration

With the announcement of the iphone 5 today and the confirmation that it will have a different connector than the ipod, I will be surious to see if BMW changes the connector on the center console cradle and how long that will take.

Currently the cradle is propriatey to iphone, and it is reasonable to assume that BMW is more concerned with making sure we can dock our phones than our ipods....so it begs the question: if you upgrade to the iphone 5 and pay for enhances bluetooth (and thus the cradle) will you get the benefit of one or both options?

Time will tell...

By the way, are people's iphones still getting super hot when connected to that cradle?

I'm hoping the BMW release an iPhone 5 compatable cradle in time for my car's delivery in November

Unfortunately when the iPhone 3G came out, BMW were about 6 months behind with making a cradle available, and when the iPhone 4 launched I think BMW were equally slow to release a cradle for that. All points to a long wait for an iPhone 5 cradle unfortunately. BMW could prove me wrong, but I'm not holding my breath

I wonder if BMW care enough about the ipersons to offer a free upgrade and install for the iphone 5 cradle to customers who buy a car with the outdated cradle in the period between the release of the iphone 5 and the release of the iphone 5 cradle...

Well the Android experience is definitely not better with a BMW. However one feature that is possible to have on an Android phone (vs iPhone) is getting the text messages on iDrive, if you care about that. Generally though support is far better on iPhones.

EDIT: According to MaestroAl this is now outdated information due to iOS6!

I wonder how much of this support that is already there in the software (of the newly built cars, especially the F31) or if we have to wait for some kind of update for our cars? Some threads describe the iOS 6 beta experience as only partly working, like only getting the messages displayed at the lock screen (!).

Hopefully I have the iPhone 5 before the F31 arrives here. Otherwise I will have iOS 6 on my ancient iPhone 4.

I'm using iOS6 Beta on my iPhone 4S, and I get SMS messages through the Office section of iDrive. You don't, however, get email integration. And yes, it's done via getting the messages that are displayed from the Notification Center on the lock screen.

Have you tried turning on notifications for Mail and selecting "banners" from Alert Style (like how Messages is configured)? I have neither iOS6 nor my new F30 yet, so I'm just wondering if that might help.

What's the point of the cradle? Seems like useless complication.

I think the cradle is for 100% integration, like video won't work without it. I would pay $50-$100 for it, but I think its over $200 right now, which is insane. It really should be included with the tech package (since that has BMW apps). What makes the price even worse is that most people get a new phone every 2 years when their contract is up, meaning you need to buy a new cradle every 2 years, and as said before BMW is normally 6 months out on producing cradles for the new iphones, expect an iphone 5 cradle in March...

I think BMW apps and e-mail/texts work without a craddle, I will find out in about a month.

I'm in doubt whether to get the apps option for my new F31 now that the iPhone 5 has launched. Not sure if apps will work with the new iPhone. http://9to5mac.com/2012/09/13/lightning-connector-spec-doesnt-list-video-out-support-airplay-is-now-only-option/

No iPod out sounds quite bad too.
I wonder what that will do to all the apps and other integration as my neighbor above says.

What do you mean "no ipod out"? What has "no ipod out"?

Should work since its running ios6 and a few people on this forum had tested iOS6 on their iPhone 4s and they got new features like text messages etc.

I didn't get apps in our X3 and wouldn't have gotten it in my 335 but in the US its included in the tech package, and the tech package is only $900 more than just getting navigation, to me the $900 was worth it for the HUD alone, so its like getting the BMW apps for free

Spotted this shot in the Apple keynote yesterday (when they were talking about the new iPod Nano), so hopefully BMW will have their act together

SMS and email integration should work over Bluetooth if Apple implements the software interface properly in iOS6. That's the way it works currently for Android and BlackBerry phones.

The 30-pin converter for the new Lighting cable doesn't support iPod out, you know the option where you get the iPod-interface on the iDrive. But it might just be the converter that doesn't support it as not much is known about the cable yet.

Taken from Apple store description of the converter "Video and iPod Out not supported"

(Photo below of how iPod out looks)
