I find it easy to envision using a piggyback as a tool for experimenting with tunes while negotiating the encryption authorization with BMW. Maybe that's what they had at Bimmerfest? Only time will tell for sure.

Believe it. They had it on display at the BimmerFest car show in Southern California yesterday.

Talked to the Dinan rep at Bimmerfest and he said they've been working on it for 2 years and at this point, they are not only late to market but BMW Germany is the one not cooperating so they told me they are going piggyback. Dinan is small fish for BMW from a global standpoint and they have no reason to give them DME access now that they have M Performance flashes for sale. Sorry but no one is cracking the DME soon including Dinan.

To be honest I'm fairly new to the German game as this is my first car but I spoke with my local DINAN dealer and they said that they had already built a prototype and are in testing and that we should see a solution in the next 6 months. I had this conversation literally less than a week ago. Thoughts?

This is odd... The Dinan reps I've been speaking to stated that BMW green-lighted their access to the ECUs (which of course seems accurate based on Shockware being a reality, which also requires ECU access). However, now that I think about it, during my most recent conversation with them, they also did indicate that there were some delays, and that they were considering an entire ECU swap... definitely not a good sign, I guess! Maybe BMW made a deal with them that only included permission to tweak the damper ECUs so as not to cannibalize PPK sales (?)
If that's the case, then I think they made the right choice: Shockware was on the top of my wish list, and my car is plenty fast enough on the track with PPK, so I wasn't really interested in aftermarket engine software anyway...

You were having the Dinan piggyback installed today? It's out? Is it really much of an increase over the MPPK?

Anyway....can't the MPPK be "uninstalled" or erased? What's d-tronic?

364HP and 375TQ. Crank figures of course. But yes, about and extra 35HP over the MPPK. Not sure if MPPK can be uninstalled. D-Tronics is the name of Dinans Piggyback.

Did you do a baseline dyno though? The thing about dynos is they are tools, used to provide a safe enviroment for testing cars, testing tunes. If you didnt do a base line on that same dyno with the same configuration, there is no way of actually knowing how much you picked up.

I havent really seen a stock dyno below 270. So assuming a 15% loss, from the factory these cars have around 320 crank. Now you add the MPPK on top of that for another 20. Maybe the MPPK is underrated as well and you really get closer to 40?

Theres just no way to tell. It could even be that the ZF trans is so good we only get a 10% loss, then the numbers would be close to BMWs #s. At any rate, from what I understand, the Dinan chip is gonna be $2000. Thats a little much for me. I know it comes with a warranty and all, but I had my JB4 on my E90 for 2 1/2 years and I didnt have a single problem. So Im gonna go JB4 again and see how it goes.

That's about 352 hp according to Dinan - they use 12% loss. But close enough.

The JB4 via CANbus reads the factory tuning targets and adjusts for any differences dynamically. Odd Dinan can't do the same thing? I guess they are new the piggyback scene...

I am sure they have it under control Mike... It is the most sophisticated "piggyback" I have ever laid eyes on. The research and development that went into this thing is monumentous and IMO raised the bar significantly. It OFFICIALLY is compatible with the MPPK and will be available in a week or two. I am just very impatient and cried like a baby because I couldn't have it right away.
I am very excited.

That's a lot of hype to live up to. You'll understand if I'm skeptical seeing how inferior Dinan's flash tuning is to say Cobb, GIAC, and other flash tuners. I expect their piggyback tuning will be similarly underwhelming compared to the major players. Be sure to post some logs from your new piggyback along with a dynojet dyno. It does produce detailed logs, right?

How can you tell from looking at it? Please list features & specs to back up your claim. Agree with Mike, Dinan always finished last when compared to the others. A good chunk of the Dinan forever group bailed out as soon as the BMW warrantee period was over. All said they wanted more power.

A really good thorough tune is not based 100% on max power IMO. It's everyday driveability, power delivery, safety, and real back up in the event something goes wrong. Not just fast technical support. Dinan backs theirs up with their wallet. If this tune is anywhere near as good as their other stuff it will be awesome. I loved all the tunes I've had over the years and those that know me know I've seen them all. I suspect this will be the most impressive yet.

So do we know yet if upgrade stages (2,3, 4) will be out of the question since they went piggy-back vs flash?

Also what about bolt ons?
