8AT in extreme situations

As some of you will know, because ZF's 8HP is so advanced, it doesn't need to go through the gears sequentially like a DCT or an old AT. Any gear can go to any other gear, such as 5th to 3rd without selecting or engaging 4th.

BMW and ZF say that in the most extreme situations, the car can go straight from 8th to 2nd. Impressive stuff, but what is this extreme situation?!
Emergency stop on a motorway but also kicking down at the same time?
A high speed rapid spin out?

Obviously, the driver must go up or down sequentially with the shifter or flappy paddles and in normal driving (D or DS) the auto also shifts sequentially.

You manually shift to 8th at 30mph whilst in Sport (not Sport+) then do a full-on kickdown. That'll select 2nd

Off you go ... who's gonna be guinea pig?

Haha, will it let me go into 8th at such a low speed? I'll knacker it!

Nahh, you'd just go through sequentially.
Kickdown switch on accelerator pedal will have to be passed.

On your gas pedal, just before it goes to the end of its travel, there is a point of resistance known as the kickdown switch.
Kickdown is when the car goes to the most optimal gear as quickly as possible to maximise performance.

So basically when you mash the snot out of the gas pedal? Then click?

You might want to look up how an AT works, as this is far from being advanced. It's just sets of planetary gears..

I understand the thread but who would be in such a high gear and then have to do this? I don't want to hit my auto lever 6 times lol. In the DCT, i've gone down three gears - 6th to 3rd, 5th to 2nd. Same with the ZF. But what's the point when you can just kick down.

I don't think I'd ever be in these "extreme situations" so maybe I'm STILL reading it wrong. lol.

im confused, so basically you guys are just talking about when you mash the peddle and the tranny kicks down to the best gear. But there is no real way to actually go from 8th to 2nd. Unless you mash the peddle and it goes into 8th then your lucky.

If you like. Or just go past the point of resistance when you come to floor it.

I'm confused..if the above quote (not SomeRandomer's) means click the paddle while flooring it - does it switch to 2nd as well?

If the click means the click below the gas pedal, that I understand.

SomeRandomer you are just confusing the shit outta me with this thread. HA

When it shifts as quickly as it does, as smoothly as it does and is as telepathically good as it is, I think I'm well within my rights to call this gearbox and its software "advanced", especially after experiencing so many others, including the old 6spd STEPTRONIC.

Yeah you're still not quite getting it haha, but I'll try and help!
The ZF 8HP does not need to select or engage every gear.
To help, forget manual mode and think of the standard D or DS automatic mode. In this mode, the car can go from 5th to 3rd without selecting or "going past" 4th. It can just completely discount 4th and go straight to 3rd. A DTC or older gearbox cannot do this, and 4th must be selected in order to get to 3rd, although it does it super rapidly.

So, as ZF and BMW claim, the 8AT can go from 8th to 2nd in an extreme situation, but what I want to know is what situation might this occur?

Yes, discount manual mode as you can only go through the gears sequentially, because you have UP or DOWN.
So we're only talking about D or DS automatic drive mode.
Therefore, I assume the "click" is the kickdown resistance switch on the gas pedal.
