Strange stuttering after starting the car sometimes.

Recently I put in an AFE intake and scorcher on my 328i sport line. Everything seems OK but sometimes when I start the car the engine seems to stutter/rumble for about 2-3 seconds. It's pretty scary and the tachometer will fluctuate up and down during these 2-3 seconds. After that it settles down and the car appears to be perfectly fine. Its happened 3-4 times already and I'm worried one of the AFE mods might be damaging something. Any ideas? I don't know much about cars.

How much fluctuating are we talking about? 100 RPM? 1000 RPM?

Reset your car to stock & test over a few weeks. If all is ok, then introduce one aFe mod at a time & test. Hope you find a solution.

I'd say 1-200. I may just start taking things off but would like to avoid the hassle if anyone has any idea why it's happening.

That's normal. Mine actually used to do it until I installed BMS Stage 1

Not sure if its the same. Just happened to my car

Stalled once, rough idle rpm fluctuating. Car attempts die sitting idle.

Turned out 2nd cylinder injector at fault

More fuel than needed spark plugs burnt.

Both replaced at dealership took five days to get parts

All good now finally.

assuming this is an issue with the factory tune, hopefully BMW makes an update for these cars fixing the problem.

I just noticed in the past week or so, when I turn on the engine from an overnight parking and start to go right after, the car "surges" forward, feels like it has a small amount of "explosive" forward momentum, it's hard to describe, it's like it's on race gas boost or something.... It "jolts" forward, would be a more appropriate description... It goes away after about 20 sec of driving, but this jolting started happening recently.

I wonder what's going on??

My 2013 328i had the same fluctuation and I called the dealer. They said its common and normal as long as the idle does not drop to the point of killing.

Slightly off topic, but how is the AFE kit working? Are you getting a noticeable boost? I am just waiting for some mad money to come in so that I can buy the intake/scorcher combo.

I hope this problem clears up eventually or something. It's annoying and scary.

I had the bms stage 1 tune before this and when I took that off I put both the afe scorcher and intake on at the same time. The main noticeable difference is that the engine is louder, there's a hearty rumble from it when I accelerate. The boost feel is pretty similar in both cases. Maybe faster in comfort mode for afe and faster in sport mode for bms. I liked both and just wanted to try something different. I don't have any real stats to back up what I said though but you'll definitely be happy with the combo.

I just posted a thread about this. my car is stock, and it seems to be kinda rough or chattery at cold start sometimes, then smooths out. guess this is normal? anything to do with the turbo spooling up?

Seems normal, cold starts tend to be a bit difficult for this motor.

I get this first start in the AM almost every day with no intake. If you feel it is really severe, try taking the intake off to see. The intake could also be messing up the MAF and amplifying the issue.

Something similar happened to my car last week, but much worse.
The car would start and studder heavily and die after 5-10 seconds.. Happened 4-5 times in a row. I tried to get some life into it by pressing the accelerator, which only killed if faster. Anyway tried it one more time and this time reving it a bit helped, and all was back to normal.

I have no clue what this was about, only happened this one time.
But the reason could be that I was up in 6000ft above sea level and my airfilter was probably a bit dirty from driving on a dirt road.

The car is completely stock
