Square setup for winters

For a square setup for 400M for winter wheel is it all 4 8J fronts I’d need?

You could put the rears on the 8J or 8.5J, and it'd make no difference

Lots of us have 400M wheels with 8J front and 8.5J rears all with 225/45/18 tyres all round. It works.

Yea I have that at the moment but those tyres on 8.5J wheels look rubbish (imo) and maybe the 8J will look weird on the rear but is that the BMW recommended setup? I’ve bought 2 more 8J 400M to make a full house....

BMW use 8J front and rear on some F3x models, in fact the chassis is more balanced for neutral handling on a square setup.

I used to run a staggered summer setup on my E91, square set in winter. Preferred the winter setup for best chassis dynamics.

Correct. My 2015 335ix came with a square 400M 8.0" wheel setup using runflat Pirelli 225/45-18.

Using the same square wheel setup, I switched to summer Michelin Pilot Sport 4S in 245/40-18 and winter Michelin X-ICE i3 in 225/45-18. I was cautioned by guys I respect to go back to 225's for winter since wider tires tend to float over rather than dig into snow. If my area got less snow I would have been tempted to stay with 245/40 or 245/45. If my area got more snow I may have gone with 225/45 Blizzak WS-90. (But Blizzak are noisier and don't handle as well in Dry. I can't go any smaller than 18" wheels because of the size of my brakes.
