100-120 kph was exactly what i was going last night. Really, the road was not that bad. Winter tire is the key. Some fools have fwd or awd or suv, they just think they will be fine but it really isn't.

it is the presence of the idiots on the road, mentioned by you above, that makes this type of driving reckless.

AWD is great for getting you going, but it doesn't do diddly for stopping. Your main concern in snow should always be how to avoid everyone who doesn't have AWD.

I find a way to get stuck with x-drive for the first time earlier on today traction is excellent but ground clearance is low. Otherwise I'm having alot of fun with it make me like winter even more!

If you americans use the metric system like the rest of us, it would make life so much easier.

Yes. Ground clearance is too low. I got my front bumper full of snow. See my pic above. If it is a x5 or x3. I will really dashing thru the snow. Lol

You're telling me. I just got a ticket on the eve before Christmas Eve doing 105 (that's 170km/h in the rest of the world ) bombing through a nearly deserted stretch of I-5 in the California desert on the way to visit family. The cop was not super thrilled about that.

I wasn't a dickhead to him, which he appreciated, so he knocked it down to 100 in a 70 instead. The 5MPH decrease was the difference between a $380 and $760+ ticket, plus since I'm from Oregon I can just pay the $380 ticket. The more expensive one would have also required that I appear in court or have counsel appear for me ($$$). So all things considered I got off easy.

In other news, though, driving this F31 going 75MPH in a straight line for hours on end is boring.as.hell.

Gee whiz...I've been driving in Canadian winters on AS tires for 47 years now and have never had a problem. I've never had an accident due to snow or ice and the one time I went off the road, I was going 15kph in a blizzard and made the mistake of following another guy. I watched his tail lights go slowly towards the left and then gently tilt a bit off horizontal...and I very slowly followed him into the ditch in the median of the highway. I've never done that again.

In any case, it is possible to drive in the winter with AS tires without causing or getting into trouble. I regularly drive the speed limit on snowy roads by following four simple rules:

1. Watch out for other drivers who do not know how to drive in slippery conditions.

2. Always keep an eye on road conditions...they can change very quickly,

3. Never do anything quickly...braking, steering, accelerating...drive so you only change the car's velocity or direction very gradually. I've seen so many cars go off the road when the front wheels are pulled left or right by a large rut or deeper snow and the driver tries to swing the car back on track too quickly, or brakes heavily...bang, around she goes and you're in the ditch...or worse, an accident.

4. If you cannot see well enough to follow the above three rules...slow down or get off the road.

This approach is not for everyone...but it is how I was taught and learned to drive in the winter, and it works for me.

I do appreciate the xDrive and I've never driven with AWD.

Alright. But driving all season in winter is not a good idea, no traction during braking. Or maybe it is just my performance tires...but u cant go wrong with winter tires...

Just had the same storm you got walloped by today in ottawa with more than 30cm of snow on the ground. Tons of people were getting stuck in residential streets that hadn't been plowed but Pirelli Sottozeros + xDrive on the 320 loaner I have means that I had no issues with getting stuck. The only time I nearly got stuck is when I drove onto a packed mound that I didn't see until the last minute and nearly beached the car. Backed out and drove around with no issue. So glad I have xDrive in these conditions.

I have pirelli as well, bought it from dealership. See my video above. The car got stuck probably had more ground clearance than my f32, but i got through anyway.

xDrive is AWD. "xDrive" is just the marketing name for BMW's transfer case design, along with the various software systems in the ABS/DSC that support it.

Absolutely, winter tires are a good thing...just sayin' that I get enough traction during braking for my needs with ASs. I have staggered Pirelli Cinturato P7 ASs on my bimmer.

I meant that before my bimmer with xDrive, I had never driven with AWD. Yes, xDrive is variable ratio AWD.
