gently kick and retract your feet....
the error people make is holding/hanging your feet there... No good...

Correct The sensors need to sense the foot and leg going toward the bumper and then away from the bumper. It will then open the trunk

I love that I have the knowledge of so many fellow 3 owners. Couldnt get it to work becuase I would leave my foot for a second so it could "sense it". BMW does things right. Quick "snap-kick" as it was described above and it pops open with zeal! Thanks guys

Stick your foot under, and pull it back quickly; like you've hit the exhaust with your bare foot and it's burning like hell.
Works 100% of the time for me. |

If the rear end of the car is parked above the thing where it stops your wheels from backing in further in a parking spot, will your trunk open when you move the car away? It'll be quite embarrassing to have your trunk open when you drive off..
Has anyone tried this? |

does the sensor ever get dirty with road grime and need cleaning?

The first two days I got it, it was ok. But now, I kind of give up on it. Regardless of what I did (swipe my feet under the roundel etc with different speeds) did not work anymore.

At the PCD they told me the sweet spot is not dead center. Rather put your foot between the Roundel and the model badge (i.e. 328i, 335i...). It works flawlessly with the aforementioned swift motion kick.

I wonder if they moved the sensor for '13 (half joking) - at the Philly Auto Show in Feb and on a couple test drives, I was getting it to work maybe 75% of the time, but pretty much 0% on our new car after 3 weeks. They had told me just barely left of center, so maybe I'll go try moving to the right!

I can only assume that it is right of the roundel because most people are rightys ? I mean every time I have ever used it, I have never used my left foot.

IF YOU FOLLOW THIS, IT WILL WORK EVERY TIME:
The kick should be swift and right in the middle, HOWEVER, the retracting of the leg is even more important. Retract you foot as fast you you kick and the boot will open every time. Mine has not failed once since I figured this out |
