Thinking of winter wheels and tyres.

en thinking of getting some winter wheels and tyres and have a questions.

My car is a Dec 2015 320i M-Sport with 19" staggered M442 wheels with 225''s on the front and 255''s on the rear. I also have M-Sport blue brakes.

A lot of winter tyre sets I have seen are 18" and 225 45 18 all round. I would like to get genuine BMW wheels and the M400 wheels look ideal as they should fit over my brakes. These wheel sets seem to be staggered too 8J front and 8.5J rears. If I get a staggered set of genuine BMW wheels can I put 225 45 18 tyres on all round or do I have to put wider rear tyres on.

People usually want squared(4x Fronts) for winter or you can go staggered if you prefer.

PS. Most tire shops will not stretch tires that far for you.

Slight digression but I was wondering what people's dealers charge for storage and changing the wheels. I'm in in N.I.

I was charged £80 for my most recent swap back in April. I've been running winters for 5 years now and I recall it was £40-60 so not a big jump in that time.

Have a look at mrwinterwheels website. May be another option to consider. The 18 inch wheels fit over brakes.

Thanks...I have looked at those wheels and they are a good price, but would prefer BMW wheels if I can get them....although I do like the black wheels.

I looked at exactly the same recently. Borbet Black Wheels with RFT winters (sottozeros’s) on 18’s. You can fit the BMW roundel on the wheels also. However at the moment it’s really warm...wonder if this will be the year that I take the plunge or I may just chance it again and hope the weather dosen’t get too bad!

225/45 R18 tyres can be fitted on an 8.5" rim. 8.5" is the widest rim for the 225 section (ETRTO standard). Not ideal when used as a square setup, but is often done.

Can you get four M400 8" rims? Would make for a perfectly balanced chassis, as a winter setup.

The sets of M400 are generally in the staggered 8j and 8.5j because that's the set they sell with the M-Sport car.

I'm not sure what I paid in December last year but when I looked at making up my own set by buying wheels I liked (not keen on after market), then tyres and TPMS, then balancing/fitting there wasn't a lot in it to be honest.

Stick with 255’s on the rear imo, that’s how my winter 400m’s are.

Yes, I think your right. I had seen a few sets for sale with 225''s all round and staggered wheels but will give those a miss unless it's worth getting them and changing the rear tyres for 255's

BMW dealers only specify 8" wheels all round with 225 tires. I wouldn't like to go against their recommendations just in case of accident/insurance issues etc. My local dealer gave me style 658, 405M, 397, 415 and 396 for my car (with blue brakes).

I store my wheels at home but swapping them over only costs me £15. The guy at the local National Tyres is a diamond. He looked in his books and yes, it would about £60 to swap them over but I helped the fitter swapping them (I can hear H&S nerds squirming in their seats) It only took about 5-10mins and he felt guilty charging £60 so only charged for a tracking adjustment.

Ring around, try a few indi's. That's what I did and it payed off.

I’m going staggered 225/255 on 400m

They are stock sizes so no issues there.

I used to run narrower tyres on my e87 but just found it to be tail happy

Okay there are some that use staggered winter wheels (225 & 255) and some that are using a square set up (225 all round) but is anyone using staggered wheels (8j front and 8.5j rear) with 225 all round as there seems to be a few sets like this on the market. This means putting a 225 on an 8.5j wheel. According to the tyre calculator app I have a 225 45 18 tyre can fit a wheel size from 7.0 to 8.5 which would suggest the tyre size is suitable for an 8.5j wheel.

Statstone in Chesterfield charge £72 per change including storage, so £144 per year. A big chunk of this charge will be transport. They send them off to a central storage location in Reading I think they said.

I'm just going to keep mine in the garage and get a local tyre place to fit.

Right now they are being kept at Stratstone and I got them to throw in the first fit charge of £36 for nothing.

As I stated in my earlier post, the 225 section tyre can be fitted, and users do fit 225 on the 8.5" rim. It will change the handling balance, tyre slip angles, etc.. How much? Only users trying the setup will know.

'Suitable' isn't a word I'd use, nor ideal. 'Allowable' is more appropriate, as strictly speaking a 225 on the 8.5" rim is at the limit, and a modification to BMW specification. The BTMA (British Tyre Manufacturers’ Association) remind users it can have insurance implications, if it deviates from OEM specification.

The ETRTO (European Tyre and Rim Technical Organisation) standard publish allowable rim fitments, the 'optimum' is a 7.5" rim for the 225/45 R18 tyre, according to the standard.

I did 3 winters on my 400 M's with 225 all round.
I found the handling quite enjoyable.

The summer set up of 19's on staggered always seemed a little too good and not the characteristic tail happy of BMW's of old.

I also went non runflat too.

Currently on sale and cheap enough for you to ditch the 225 rears if you wanted to go 255.
