its Extortion. If you paid 300 for it and then all of a sudden they say it will stop working unless you pay 80 a month, lol so funny. its like they sell you a car that comes with 'something' ...lets say a trunk, then all of a sudden say well if you want the trunk to keep opening after a year then you have to pay 80 per year. lol this can open up to a subscription service nightmare for anything in a car... whats next?

Don't get too excited now. They wouldn't charge yearly for people who've already purchased it. They'd only do it for new cars, if they did it at all. It's like older BMWs that received lifetime traffic. They never charged for traffic for those cars.

It's ridiculous that they even charge for it to begin with, but BMW obviously feels like they can get away with it.

Optimistically I am going to look at this as a possible indiction they will make it not suck. I have it and I disabled it. It is terrible.

It’s typical BMW arrogance that they already charge $300.00 for CarPlay. It’s std on my $29,000 retail GTI and on my mom’s Chevy Cruze for gosh sakes.

I agree, have they lost their minds!? I was really looking forward to a 530e after my 330e lease... but this... I don't know. They should at least include it for 4 years minimum to match the other included services.

I image it would start with a future model year and not affect current cars that had it as an option. The only upside being it would avoid the headache of searching for a used BMW with CarPlay as the current situation of a finding a used car that had that $300 option will be a pain.

I did not order CarPlay after reading mixed reviews from early adopters. No regrets.

I paid for apple car play and hardly ever use it.

I also recently noticed that in Australia BMW are now charging for a 3 year subscription as the only option. The cost being the same as what I paid for non subscription. Both are such rip offs.

Yup. It's so buggy even on my 2017 X5 using a USB cable. The Bluetooth Airplay is even worse. To make matters worse, it handles multiple phones terribly.

They have some balls to have such a piss poor implementation of Airplay and THEN charge a yearly fee of $80 just to use it. For a completely unconnected piece of software. Where do they get off charging a yearly fee for something that doesn't require ongoing service. I can understand charging for satellite radio, traffic, and any service requiring internet. However, charging for something that is just an offline piece of software that requires no real hardware is just disgustingly greedy.

BMW originally had free traffic and weather info using the BTC info from HD Radio data, but went to the RTTI and now makes you subscribe after several years or all traffic is turned off.

Just as bad, but sign of things to come (such as this).

When ordering my car last year, I too thought that Apple Carplay would be some neat "permanent" option which might evolve over the years in terms of functionality or additionally supported apps... Only to find out that after I finally got the car / VIN that CarPlay already *is* a subscription (at least here in Europe) which will expire after 3 years on the same date as the base BMW Connected or RTTI services! Renewing it would cost about the same as the original "option" price.

Also since I do hate Apple Maps and am not using any music streaming apps, the only currently carplay supported app I'd actually use is the iOS native Phone app. However I really prefer the BMW native phone integration. Furthermore I meanwhile also realized that Siri functionality is restricted as long as CarPlay is active, i.e. Siri won't launch any (not CarPlay supported) apps like my favorite speed camera warning app if CarPlay is active!
Wish I had known before...

I've been preaching about the crap that CarPlay is on this board for about 18 months now. Thanks for "seeing the light"

That said, paying extra for it is a stupid business model. It came standard in my '16 Honda Civic - far from a high end car!

One silly article I read said that BMW is doing this because they don't want people who lease the car for 3y to have to pay 300 for it (yeah how about all the other overpriced options???). Doing the math, its 160 for 3y (first year free) via subscription. Alternatively, on a lease you pay ~40% of 300 (given residuals and discount) + financing which is ~$120. They're just being greedy.

Also I think the idrive menu is still better than CarPlay. My dad's 25k accord has it standard and I don't really use it when I drive it.

I wouldn't even have paid the $300 for it. Maybe I would do it if Waze or Google Maps was one of the apps that is included. But otherwise, I don't see the $300 of benefit. My '14 328 already displays text messages to the iDrive screen, and I have BT streaming audio.

Here's a novel idea--make CarPlay and Android Auto standard like so many other car makers. Then no one has to pay anything.

If BMW does that, they'll probably charge for major updates. Sigh...
