Launch Control

I'm sure I read on these forums (in the past) that Launch Control exists but now can't seem to find the thread. However I do remember what was done in order to achieve the Launch Control.

Driving mode into Sport +
Gear Selector over to the left
Foot on the brake and a prod to the accelerator should bring up the "Launch Control activated (or words to that effect) in the HUD

That is what I tried last night but got nothing.

Can someone please confirm or otherwise?

If there is no launch control, what do you find is the best technique to get the best 0-60 time in your car?

I've never bothered and it's not really something I try, but I'm curious and want to try it out to see what I get.

Sounds like you've got the right modes selected, however note that you have to push the brake pedal HARD, then put the throttle to the floor (not a prod - hard to the floor).

Then should work like this:

Got to hit that sneaky button behind the accelerator pedal. I still haven't tried it in my 435d...

I've only done it once and it made no difference to stick left (auto still) and sport plus in terms of 0 to 60 times.

You do have to push hard on the brake as said and really quickly stamp the accelerator to the floor or the car just revs and you vapourise a tenner worth of rear tyres!

The comment on engine / transmission being warm is correct - you have to have driven a minimum distance though I can't remember what that is.

Launch control - it's a bit rude (apparently).

This video still makes me roar:

Two points;
- I didn't realise the accelerator needs to be right to the floor
- I tried it from complete cold (I wasn't going to actually do it, I just wanted to see if I could get it to activate)

Thank you, kind folk.

Had my car two years and never tried it. Will have to give it a go just to see if it works.Need to find a deserted country road though. Wouldn't want anyone seeing me do it as you look a dick.

There's a thread on here somewhere about this. I think it said something like 5 miles and it can only be done once every 30 mins or so...

Not sure if that's just the driver being cautious though

I have too much mechanical sympathy to try it on my car, but I had a loan 335d for a week, so that felt like the right time to try it! It is pretty brutal - it feels like someone has just driven into the back as it launches off the line. I did it twice within 5 minutes.

I thought it was 7 miles and the car had to be warm, but i've done more that 7 miles and had a very warm car and still couldn't get it working. In the end I had foot on hard on the brake, revs at 2.5K then foot off the brake and M laptimer recorded 3.9 to 60 and it pulled 0.76 G

Does the car log launches?, remember Audi rejecting DCT clutch replacements under warranty due to what they called "excessive" use. Nobody could get an exact figure out of them though. Funny thing is people who had never used launch had DCT issues too. Looks like they were just using it as an excuse.

See my video above (post #2) - I did 2 launches in as many minutes. Fortunately it wasn't in my car!

Is there any way to time the 0-60 from within in the car? iDrive setting?

You could use the M Laptimer app on your phone

Launch control limits it at 3,000 revs, your foot is still flat to the floor. As soon as you launch the revs rise as you get moving.

In the 340i it's only just over 2,000, not 3,000 revs like the diesls, and is pretty underwhelming compared to the diesel launch, which is anything but underwhelming.

I can only assume that it's the difference between x and s drive that makes BMW set the revs on the uk petrol lower. On engine alone, you'd expect as it revs higher overall that the limit would be a little higher at launch too.

I'm on my 4th F31 and never tried Launch control in any of them - always tempted to do it on the way back to the dealers when picking up a new car but worry I'll crash !

RTFM!

Also the manual states that acceleration will be optimum on the 2nd launch as the first launch assumes Mu.
Mu is obviously determined during the 1st launch so I'd expect it's well worth doing twice if you want a headline figure.

I found just mashing the throttle through to kick-down from a standstill in sport/sportbox was plenty quick for road use unless you're doing competitive stuff or whatever and need those extra tenths from LC.
