I read somewhere that the EPA would not test using EcoPro, but rather the "Normal" settings. Don't remember where, but BMW wasn't too happy that they wouldn't even take that setting into account. Nothing official, so I could just be feeding a rumor. Anyone have an factual evidence regarding this?

RIP Manual transmission.
Sorry to say, but I fear the end is near for the manual transmission, in the USA. With CAFE standards and certifications cost. I suspect it will not be long before they take the option away
Manual trans were cheaper, better MPG and fun to drive. Then it was just better MPG and fun to drive. Now just fun to drive. Congrats on the MPG BMW, but please don't take away the manual option. Owned 8 BMW(s) all manuals. |

If the MT take rate is only 5%, as reported elsewhere I saw recently, then it should not impact CAFE much. The new figures and better 8AT are likely to reduce that 5% even further. I know I am considering AT for the first time.
They could do it to reduce certificatin costs and I could see them eliminating it as an option for the bread & butter 328i and only allowing MT on 335i. They did that on F10 528i. |

Impressive. I am already impressed with the the fuel economy of my (current) 335i.
Not as much difference between the 328i vs. 335i autos as I thought there may be...

Hard for a manual driver to shift more efficiently than an automatic and easy to rev higher than efficiency calls for ( fun factor). Who has the restraint to drive their 6MT more efficiently than an automatic?

my 'Ol ZHP used to do 32 on the HWY going 75. Thus, I believe those numbers on the 328; which is very impressive.
Crap, it does better than my 2.5L 5 cylinder motor on my MKV jetta |

impressive. my 6mt 328i was rated at 18/28 epa, but i avg 24.5 mixed and easily get 30-31 on interstate flogs from austin to dallas.
as for the manual-auto debate... at this point, there really is no point for my next car to be a manual. the 8at rev-matches very well - the paddle shifter will do for me; don't need to row my own gears anymore

2012 F30 328i 8-speed auto: 24 city / 36 highway.
2012 F30 335i 8-speed auto: 23 city /33 highway. 1mpg difference city - 4% difference. Ugh. So a detuned N55 6-cyl. @ 240-260HP (20% less power) would probably match the N20. 4-cyl. turbo = BIG fail. |

Based on my personal experience with a manual transmission you can easily beat the EPA estiamtes by a few MPG but with automatic it is the otherway around.
In the euro cycle the difference beween 328 manual and automatic MPG is insignificant (combined manual 44.1 vs automatic 44.8). But I agree that the advantage of manual transmission in terms of efficiency is gone. |

Well that's great news cuz I plan on getting an F33 when my E93 hits 7yrs old.( May 2015) by this time I'll grab a 335i off lease.
And getting about 33% better mileage will be awesome!! |
