Gauge Cluster Keeps Navigating?
Hey Everyone, new owner here. Picked up a CPO 2013 328xi last week and I've been loving it. Came from a 2003 X5 4.4i, so there is a lot of new stuff to enjoy!
I've searched but haven't seen this issue before. After I got my vehicle I updated the Maps to 2016. When I did this, after USB Key 4 the screen freaked out and was just flashing white lines randomly. I rebooted the Nav by holding the volume button down till it did a hard reset and it's been fine since except for one issue I just noticed. I don't know if this issue is related to the map update, since I only had the vehicle 1 day before updating from 2012 to 2016 maps. When I navigate somewhere, the display in the gauge cluster keeps navigating after I've already arrived. Two examples: Went to Yellowstone yesterday. Had it navigate to West Yellowstone in Montana, then I continued on to Yellowstone with no nav. Once I arrived in West Yellowstone, navigation stopped navigating because I had arrived, but the gauge cluster kept telling me to go backwards back to West Yellowstone. I couldn't stop it, because the navigation system wasn't guiding me. I had to enter in a new destination, then stop guidance to get the gauge cluster to stop trying to route me back. On the way home, same thing. When I arrived home, navigation stopped guiding me, but the gauge cluster wanted me to go backwards 100ft after I was in the garage. I'm taking the vehicle in to the dealer on Wednesday for some issues, and would like to get opinions on this before I go in and possibly add it to the list. Right now for another 4K miles it's still under factory warranty.

I should also add, I did update the software version as well last week. Per BMW's website, I updated to the most recent version for me which was update UPD01008. Not sure if this is related or not either. I didn't notice any changes afterwards.

I have a feeling that the update was not completely finished, especially when the screen freaked out. Maybe it was trying to load the last bit of the data and synchronize between the HU and instrument cluster when the error happened. Have you tried to update the map one more time to see if the update goes through entirely?

No, since my brother in Colorado has the USB keys. I could re-download it. The update had finished. It said it was complete and would restart. The restart it performed is when it didn't come back up right.
I didn't think about re-performing the map update, I certainly could do that.

Took it to the dealer today for a couple of items, had them check this out. According to the tech, this is normal. While I don't agree, it's not worth arguing about. For the most part I don't use nav, I just like to see the map. I guess I can live with this for now.

This is in fact normal. The maps use an address location on the GPS map and drops a pin on it. Sometimes this dropped pin is not accurate. After you have arrived at your destination what this arrow is trying to show you is the bearing of the dropped pin with respect to your car's current GPS location.

I bought a new F36 a while ago and my car also did the same thing. Asked my dealer and he said it was normal. When you arrive, the gauge cluster shows an arrow to where your destination is so you know in which direction you have to walk once you parked your car. If you don't want it, you should stop the nav before you arrive.
Once you've stopped the car (shut off engine), the gauge cluster returns to normal. |

Thanks for the followup response to this, I understand what it's doing now. I've never had a system do this so perhaps that's why I found it confusing. I appreciate your followup and explanations!
