318i vs 320d vs 418i
My brother in law lives in Turkey and he is interested in getting a new BMW.
Living in USA, I am not familiar with difference in these engines, but I believe 3/418 models are 1.5L engine and 3/420 are 2.0L engines. 418 coupe has 0-60mph at 9.2sec, 126hp which seems extremely slow to me, but it seems like norm out there, so my suggestion to him was to get 320d xdrive instead of 418i (non-xdrive), or if he can afford to get 420d xdrive (7.2sec/190hp) Pricewise there is about $25,000 difference between 418i and 420d, which is huge. If anyone has any suggestions on these, I'd love to hear from you. Also, are 3 and 4 series due for fresh soon, he is being offered $13,000 off on 2017 320d.

I'd always get the 20d; much more torque and mileage than any gas engine in that size. And a lot more available engine mods if that's what he wants. |

Thanks, turns out he pulled the trigger today after finding out 420d is starting at equivalent of USD $112k and 320d he is getting will be shy of $68k. At this point it was no brainer for him to go with 320d with a few options.
418d was much cheaper, even less than 320d, but xdrive is not offered in 418d, so he went with 320d. In reference to engine mods, can you give me some examples? The only issue is his is 2017, he was told he can't get '18 unless he waits about 3-4 months. For the price, I don't think it's too bad where he lives (in Turkey) and without a doubt diesel will be much better than gasser, combined with xdrive I think he is in for a very nice surprise, going from 318i (non xdrive) gasser.

Hello!
He will definitely not regret choosing a 320d. I've tested both 318d and 320i before pulling the trigger on a 320d xDrive. Based on my personal experience the 2.0 litre diesel engine with 190hp is the first engine in the whole BMW lineup that makes F30 a very capable driving machine with more than enough power. Judging by the way this car develops the power, it provides a feeling that is closer to 328i than it is to 320i, although the numbers on the paper suggest otherwise. Again, excellent choice and congratulations! Regards, |

Thank you.
Are the 2017 320d's different than the 320d's in the US (sold as 328d despite having 2.0L engine) in terms of body and interior? He went with 320d Pure+Prestige+Plus packages. I believe this equals to Convenience + Premium packages (or tiers) in the US. The only thing is I think they are putting older iDrive in 2017's out there, is that correct? The smaller screen instead of larger screen?

Hello!
I don't think there are any differences between 2017 320d and 328d in terms of body and interior. There is a difference however in terms of engine. While 328d has N47 engine (184 hp, 380 Nm), the European 2017 320d has a new B47 engine with 190 hp and 400 Nm of torque. The new B47 unit is quieter, more refined and offers a more linear power surge. They are both great engines though. The iDrive screen size depends on which navigation system you get. If you get a Navigation System Business or if you don't get a nav system at all, you end up with a small screen. If you decide for Navigation System Professional, you end up with a large screen. Thanks, I meant if there were any differences on interior between 2017 and 2018, it looks like '18 gets LED tails and headlamps while 2017 has xenons.
I see why some 17s had large/wide iDrive screen and others had small squarish display. Must be different packages, whereas in USA we get same large screen no matter what package.
