The X1 weight number is from Canada where it is only sold as AWD. Its built off the E91 underpinning from my understanding and it doesn't sit as high as an X3. I can't imagine it would handle hardly any different from the E91X. E91 without AWD is 3594 so about 130 lbs lighter than X1 with AWD. Bad news is I don't think we will get the stick option so if you want to row your own it will be a dissapointment. For me if I wanted the AWD I'd go X1 instaed of F31 with AWD but if you didn't need AWD I'd go wagon if we had those as options.

Just got word from my trusted CA that according to the 2012 US production schedule, the F31 is not coming to the US. This year is the unofficial end of the wagons in the US.
I'll be ordering an E91 for a June-ish ED... -Michael

As stated earlier in this thread, ROW production for the F31 doesn't start until Sept 2012, so it's likely that the US F31 would be a MY13 car anyway. Your CA has only confirmed there is no F31 in 2012, or that BMW NA has confirmed it's not coming at all?

BMWNA has not confirmed or denied, but it seems unlikely if the F31 is not going to be a 2012 model (EDs should be able to happen immediately after the release).
I'm not holding out much hope...

Side bar: If the F30 did not start production in 2011 they would have called it a 2013 but BMW AG was hell bent on this whole almost full world launch on the same day to make some kind of political statement that MUNICH could supply the entire world with cars for launch- they are stock piling F30s here....

From what I hear is that the E91 in the US has followed the E61 and become screwed to US showroom floors. Where there is still plans to bring the F31forward to the US, there is concern , especially with the imminent arrival of the BMW X1. With the E91, though US buyers are buying the X3 instead.
As BMW like every other premium wagon manufacturer cannot sell a typical wagon when the the market has migrated to the safety , security and solidity of SUV's. The 3er GT might not make it to the US especially in light with the reaction to the 5er GT which has shown it's surprising sales especially in the all important BRIC markets. Of Brazil, Russia , India and China. When The Touring is unveiled in late Spring, We should know more. But when the Touring goes on sale in Europe in September - M-Sport and xDrive will be available from launch.

Thanks for the update Scott, always appreciated. Tell some of the locals that we don't all think of SUV's as safe, secure or solid and at least a few of us would still like a wagon with all three pedals, please and thank you.
PS, great news on the GT, let the developing markets have it! |

The market for the F31 will become even smaller in the US as the X1 will steal some and the rest will opt for the X3. The X1 being a glorified wagon marketed as an SAV- much like the A4 All Road in some ways.

I dont think they are worried about overlap between f31 and x1 buyers. Luxury Wagon buyers are not crossover buyers, even though the vehicles are similar on paper. If I cant get a f31 ill prob get an f30, not an x1.
Btw, bmw launched the e90 in march 05 and e91 in september 05. So i think the september date as a 2013 model makes most sense. It wont get much fanfare from marketing so they dont really need to stagger it. |

You may also recall that back in 2005 when the E91 wagon launched it was delayed at the port for a month thanks to the EPA. You will be surprised by the X1 in person- it is a wagon and if they price it below the F31 it will steal customers as the handling is like a wagon as is the fuel economy especially with the proposed diesel- granted it is not based on the newer platforms and doesn't have all the same tech features which will only be on the F31 and that will draw some to it. I am a wagon guy and I would have no issue with the X1.

I've seen some X1s up close in Europe and it still has that crossover look. Not a bad looking vehicle, but I like wagons because I get utility with a cars handling and ride height. I also want RWD which is why I got into BMWs in the first place.
