If the oil changes are up to date then they will warranty even if the car is outside of warranty. This came from the foreman of the dealership I go to.
Good info! I plan to talk to my dealership on my next oil change/service. I will let you guys know how it goes.

But will keep you posted. And Yes, all is covered under warranty.
Any updates?

I had my '12 N20 timing chain replaced recently under CPO warranty.

Here is a good article I found about the issue:

Here is a copy of the invoice for work done, I'll have to look and see if I can find the SIB number.

tough luck sorry to hear that buddy. I bought a 2013 sportline with 32k miles from a lexus dealership. had all maintenances done in a bmw dealership. It wasn't cpo but it was under the factory warranty still so and bmw's are known to give problems. luckily *knock on wood* the only major problem my car has had so far are parking light replacements. Its around 46k miles right now and seems to be running fine but my warranty does expire very soon.

Well heard back from dealership, "INTERNAL OIL PUMP FAILURE" was the cause of the failure. Also they said sludge build up was thick which decreased lubrication to the cylinder head as the oil passages where built up and blocking oil. Car had 3 oil changes since new. So safe to say the 10K oil change is BS and further backs up the long debate about having the dealership save money on oil changes and making the car last till warranty is up!

I should be getting car back this weekend as they have replaced lots of parts in the cylinder head due to lack of lubrication and scoring. But will be doing oil changes every 3k to 5k max! Also they say Diff and Tranny is lifetime as well, I fully disagree, as metal to metal contact creates metal shaving which turn the oil darker and less lubrication happens. So I advise everyone to stick with the old school method of changing tranny and diff oils every 30K which is same as brake fluid if you want your car to last over 100K miles.

I will probably drive the car for 1 year or less and sell it to get rid of depreciation as I bought the car at a very fair price. Probably will get into a E92 335 or M3. The older cars feel more solid built, these new cars feel like plastic with very numb and soft feeling.

I read on exactly this subject on russian bimmer forum. Here are the pictures of the failed chain: https://fotki.yandex.ru/users/abubaca/album/168006/

Rough translation of the case would be something like "The chain seems to be built low quality - it instead to be "eternal" it quickly stretched. This happens as follows: pin breaks a seat in the inner chain links. The diameter of the pin a strongly longitudinal loose link which I made out of 2.67mm, the diameter of the outer ear (not broken) link - 2.67mm. diameter holes broken (internal) parts of 2.79-2.85mm. The deformation can be seen with bare eye (the oval), if you look closely. Ping does not wear."

There is tons more details from those who opened the engine and closely inspected what happened.

On my car, the i-Drive told me when it needs it...nothing about 10K miles in between. I had my first oil change at 6700miles per I-drive (and 1 year of ownership). I dont think I'd push it more than that regardless, I will agree on that part.

Same issue happened to me
2013 BMW X3 28i
N20 Engine at 53,000 miles "drivetrain" malfunction

Dealer is quoting me $17k to repair. Not covered and they are not helping.

See my post here.

OUCH!!! Just read your thread on the other forum. Hope BMW makes it right for you. 3K outta of warranty..... I would hope they would stand behind their product.... especially considering this looks like " a known issue".
And since a part number change occured jan 2015 for timing chain....BMW cant really plead ignorance.

Just asked my SA and there wasn't a SIB per say, BMW opened PUMA cases if customers complained on a case by case basis.

Sorry. I'm guessing since BMW did the part redesign they knew it could be a shitstorm so they decided to wait and let customers bitch about the noise before they stepped up.

It would be interesting to get access to BMWNA to see how many of these PUMAs have been initiated.

And then find out what the criteria is for NHTSA to affect a recall in USA.

Plus the thermostat issue.
