I have to agree about BMW being confusing these days. It's not that I don't see the point of the 3GT; I do. What I don't get is BMW's current pricing structures. Almost across the entire 1 and 3 ranges, here in the US, if you take a lower numbered car and equip it to match the next higher numbered car that has only your must have options, the price variance alone - usually $1400 - $2500 -- is almost never enough to justify buying the lower numbered car. I've found that to be so for the X1 vs. X3, 320i vs. 328i, and the 328i vs. the 335i. In the E-series cars, the E91 was more expensive than an similarly equipped X3. It's no wonder folks bought SUVs instead of wagons given the similarity in cargo capacity and fuel economy. Now, with the E91 and 3GT coming, it remains to be seen which model -- X1, 3GT, X3 or E91 -- will be the most compelling, especially with folks for whom rear legroom is not especially important. (Yes, the legroom in the X1 is a bit less than that in the 3-type vehicles, but it's enough for any adult on a 60 minute or less trip. After all, it's more legroom than you'll find in coach on an airplane, and God knows we've all sat there for an hour or more.)

The 3 series with it's little kidney grills has a very pedestrian look to me and there are so many, they might as well have badged them "Taurus". So it comes as no surprise that the 3 series fans don't like the 3GT. Yawn. Good. Many of you seem to think a wagon looks good as well. Double good. You aren't the audience for the 3GT and BMW doesn't exist to give you cars only you like.
I'm the target audience for this car and I think it's great. Wagons are just plain ugly and I wouldn't be caught dead in one. Ditto a sedan. For that matter, the effeminate banana design of the X3 and X1 are also difficult to warm up to. That's where the Pontiac designers went. Pull up behind either one and what you see is a Vibe with misaligned tail lights. For those of us with a sport activity lifestyle, until now, those X cars were our only BMW choices at a price point under the X5 and X6. The higher entry height, overall size, interior space with a hatchback are a great combo and BMW's put them in a nice aggressive design. The GT is a great package for those of us who want a car with the multiple personalities of DHP, has a great interior space for the occasional group outing/kids/grandkids/carseat+4 adults yet doubles up for when cargo space is needed all without having to haul around the big empty box in the back 24x7 that the SUVs require. Putting this vehicle as a 3 series instead of the X4 that people thought was coming made it even more attractive as the options and packages of the 3 series are more driver oriented. Awesome! I would expect a F34 optioned like I'd like (i.e. identical to my current car) to sticker at ~$62K. Quote:

Exactly. I dare say, if there were a hybrid powertrain, I'd like it even more.

I would like to see a hybrid F34 as well, but I'm afraid it would top 4100lbs. Which is just too damn heavy for something on a 3-series chassis. A 325d version sounds appealing, however.

Yes, the weight of BMW's two motor hybrid power train leaves them no quarter but to put diesels in the US product line as lipstick for the CAFE standards. Pity.

That's why I'm not trying to convince anyone that this is the car for them, hopefully it stays unpopular, so there'll be less of them on the road and we can get it at a better discount. lol |

A good example... the F30 335i. Allocations are in short supply and most dealers are not being aggressive with discounting. The AH3 on the other hand... can be aggressively negotiated on, and allocations seem plentiful. I'm not sure if dealers have a quota on moving certain sub-models or not, but it probably looks good to sell more of AH3 (or 3er GT) related to other dealers, because inherently its a tougher sale. |
