New, Leftover 2012
Came across a new, leftover 2012 328i. It's nicely optioned with a MSRP of $49,500. What kind of discount off MSRP do you think I should be aiming for if I decide to pursue it? I can get a similar new, leftover 2013 for $9000 off MSRP.

IMO the 2012 should have a bigger discount than the 2013, id say around 12-14,000...but i dont know much about pricing.
your decision also depends what kind of warranty you're getting with it. most likely it wont be a fresh warranty...which means you'll have 1 year left on the 2012 and 2 on the 2013.....in which case id go with the 2013

Both cars are sold as new with full warranty and the 4 year maintenance program from the date of sale.
I was thinking $12,000 off for the 2012. The RWD cars are less desirable here in New England as well. |

What should be more of a concern is a 2.5 year-old car (going on 3) that is still left on the lot. I would be VERY mindful of lot rot in areas like the tires. Thoroughly check the car out. Also, what mileage does it have? Used as a partial dealer loaner? Why hasn't it sold? Any repairs made to the car? You'd be surprised how many so-called "new" cars on dealer lots have had repair work (sometimes extensive) done to them from damage from transport, acts of God, etc.. that they don't disclose upfront.

From what I understand, the warranty is always from the build date... in which case I would more than likely go with the 2013 instead of the 2012. But if its the 2012 that you're going to go with, definitely use the fact that the warranty is already 2-3 years as a bargaining chip.

Correct, warranty commences on in-service date. OP will get 4 year/50k warranty starting from the date of purchase if the car is legitimately brand new.

I'd be very careful. Assuming it's been sitting outside it's entire life, that thing is a problem just waiting to happen. Unless you plan on keeping it for 4 years or less, I'd stay far away.

Warranty starts from the date that the dealer 'punches' the warranty card start date with BMW of America (in the case of the US). There have been many cases (I'm more familiar with Porsche on this issue) where people have bought demo cars or cars that have sat on the lot for 6 months to a year plus that had already had their warranty card punched. It is an unscrupulous process to say the least. The unsuspecting buyer finds this out when they go for a warranty claim near the end of the 48th month he/she has owned the car only to discover their is no coverage left. Just always verify at sale (and proof) of warranty 'start date'.

gf2020, I would not get the car you are asking this forum about. There is a reason why the car has been sitting around for nearly 3 years. Do you really want to be the one that finds out the hard truth and the hard way. I just cancelled my 2014 EB II 435 (with literally all options including black grills and MPPK) because the car took over 5 months to deliver which I felt was unacceptable. I will be reordering but this time a 2015 435. Do yourself a big favor and either order a 2014 or wait a few months and order a 2015. If you are on a fixed budget maybe get 2013 then. Good luck.

How many miles, and what's the story on where it's been all this time?
"Nearly 3 years" is an exaggeration though, because there were 2012s going in-service summer of 2012, so it's more accurate to say "nearly 2 years." Still, I'd want to know what the story is. If it seems to have been moved around a bit, or kept indoors, I'd suggest no less than $12-14k off sticker. |
