Purchasing a 4 series advice?

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I am looking to a 428i as my first bmw. I'm looking to get a certified pre-owned from a bmw dealer. I've been reading around about costs related to the vehicle and what not. Just wondering how much you guys are spending per month on your 4 series? (Gas, maintenance etc..) Anything I should know about buying a 428i xdrive? How much does the warranty cost? Anything to know for the long run?

If it is CPO, it should have maint. covered till 50k miles, and you may be able to extend that till 100k which will cover a an almost $2,000 brake job. The extended maint. runs between $2K and $3k, so that makes it worth it alone. Oil changes are every 10k and cost $90-110. CPOs are usually warranted till 100k miles and 3 or 4 years, so you should be good with the warranty also.

You dealer will give you the upfront charge for extending maint, ect. It is sometimes negotiable.

Just to clarify for you:

BMW Certified Pre-Owned: Covers you for 2 years/50,000 miles* whichever comes first, after the expiration of the 4-year/50,000-mile New Vehicle/SAV Limited Warranty for a total of 6 years/100,000 miles.* For Certified Pre-Owned vehicles retailed on or after January 1, 2014, up to 6 years of BMW Roadside Assistance and BMW AssistTM Emergency Call, which includes Automatic Collision Notification, and TeleService are included.

BMW Certified Pre-Owned Elite: These are newer model year, lower mileage (more than 300 miles but less than 15,001 miles) vehicles. This warranty covers you for 1 year/25,000 miles* after the expiration of the 4-year/50,000-mile New Vehicle/SAV Limited Warranty or for a total of 5 years/75,000 miles.* For Certified Pre-Owned vehicles retailed on or after January 1, 2014, up to 5 years of BMW Roadside Assistance and BMW AssistTM Emergency Call, which includes Automatic Collision Notification, and TeleService are included.

The 428 is a great BMW that you will no doubt enjoy for years to come, if you plan to keep it for a while then go for the extended warranties and drive it worry free!

Thanks guys!

A question for you Smithf32, the 435i bumper fits on the 428i? Looks like you have the 435i bumper in your picture in your signature?

That is the MSport front bumper, it is avaliable in the MSport package on both the 428i and 435i.

Funny enough I did also do a 435i exhaust conversion on my car, but I assume that that is not what you are talking about since you mentioned my signature picture.

Be advised that the first 4 Series started delivering in November 2013 so there won't be much certified preowned inventory for quite a while. It takes 3 years to come off lease. And if you were looking for the four-door version, that started delivering a year after that in late 2014.

The current model 3 Series first launched in late 2012 and we are just now seeing significant inventory in that model hitting dealer lots. You will have far better luck finding a 3 Series with a strong option list then a 4 Series as a CPO vehicle right now.

This really depends on area.

There are 62 4 series CPO within just 50 miles of my zip code.

A lot of the 4 series that are for sale CPO now are going to be considered CPO Elite, as they mostly have less than 15k miles on them. They were probably executive demo or previous loaner cars, mine was.

Depends when it was first sold. Anything sold new after 7/1/14 no longer has maintenance included for subsequent owners. Its for the original owner only.

I'd go for the M Sport version. It's sharper to drive than the sport and looks better. Not driven the xdrive but the suspension is slightly higher than the non xdrives.
Has good performance for a 4 cylinder. Expect around 30 mpg so fuel cost is reasonable, apart from that and servicing not had any other maintenance costs.
I did have a high speed vibration issue after 6000 miles but was eventually fixed with a new prop shaft under warranty.
Make you get the Professional Nav and non base hi fi, apart from that it is a good car.

Not apples to apples to your situation, but I spend ~$638/mo on my wife's 335. Lease is $458/mo, insurance is $80/mo and gas is ~$100/mo. She doesn't use it very much (800 miles/month and gas is $3/gallon where we live)

Good luck!

For what it is worth, you will have a different (non sport) suspension in your 428 xdrive (or any other xdrive). I believe even if you get the adaptive suspension you still have different (not lowered) springs. Personally, I think you should get a RWD BMW and snow tires....

Can be bought back in for $300 or so. Lots of dealers will cover this as a selling tool. Either way, make sure you have it.

is it possible to put the Msport package on a certified pre owned by the dealer? or did you have it done privately? and how much did it cost? How much was the exhaust conversion as well?

Technically yes but there are not really many kits out for the F32 yet. Exhaust conversion was a few hundred.

I would say if you REALLY love the car you found than get it and add MSport parts in a year maybe when I assume they are avaliable and cheap like they are for the f30, if not keep looking for MSport

I think the confusion is because the M Sport package is not available on 428's in Canada. M Sport is 335/435 only. I think the wagons and such are different though.
