What's this "y cable" look like? Can you get one anywhere, like at one of the computer outlets?

Any suggestions as to where to get a Y cable period? Or how much it costs?

BTW, I'm guessing the answer is at the dealership.

Its not a simple y cable, it actually has some chips inside.
Computer store y Cable will NOT work

Should be Part Number "61 12 0 440 812"
Available from many sources, even BMW dealerships over Amazon

Before you folks in the US go out and buy this (relatively expensive) BMW part, make sure you actually need it. E90Fleet's advice may not apply in the US, where both Nav and non-Nav cars are equipped with a higher-level audio system. Other recent models in the US, notably the F10, work with the standard white USB cable from Apple for iPhone connection. That may not be the case in South Africa.

I give info according to regions

If you read the posts you will see differnt info was given for USA cars against Euro cars

The info is correct for USA cars

Most F10 have the combox standard and dont need the y cable
Standard USA F30 with 6NH need the cable, as confirmed by USA members that have taken delivery

Which means it's gonna be outrageously overpriced, right? Dare I ask how much this over-engineered wire is?

I believe about $60 from BMW
I see the neXplug one on Amazon has many reviews saying it works perfectly and is only $21

I bought mine on ebay about two years ago for much less than the prices quoted at the bmw accessories site (http://www.shopbmwusa.com/ProductDet...&ProductId=748), which is about $370, I think I paid $35 or so.

There are a lot of "knock-offs" but I see some authentic looking OEM products on there now running at $30 and up.

I plan on using mine when I upgrade to the F30 later this year.

You have to be kidding me. People actually paid this?! Was this thing certified by the FAA exclusively for Air Force One?! What a joke.

Its now $60
Thank link also does not say which one it is, as there is one that includes a whole new control box and wiring for some early cars, thus costly (Not F30)

I listed the price from the bmwusa website of $370, my intention was not to be facetious. I know you can get it cheaper and if you can get it officially from the dealer for $79 that's not to shabby. At least you know it will work.

I wasn't slamming YOU. But someone must have bought this thing at that price, else they wouldn't have had it listed as such. They obviously bowed to the aftermarket competition. Still, even $79 is waaay too much.

No worries, it's good to know you can get OEM products for cheaper. A good first stop is always ebay. I've bought quite a few items at great prices. Just don't buy impulsively definitely keep a keen eye out for "fakes," but if you're not in a rush you'll definitely save.

If you want to stream audio from your iPhone over Bluetooth, you will need Enhanced Bluetooth.

About a year ago I was listening to my iPod while traveling in a rental Ford Fusion. I remember unplugging the USB connection and it kept playing through the Ford system.

I'm not saying Ford is the standard but at least playing music over BlueTooth comes in the cheap Ford Fusion systems.

One would hope in 2012 BMW could make that part standard or close to it. I guess they make more money by making us all pay dearly.

So i plug my iphone into the y adapter today and it totally fucks my phone for like 2 hours. It has worked perfectly the last 10 times i plugged it in, but for some reason, it just made it inoperable. When i got the apple store phone starts working again(on its own), apple people said others have been having similar problems(not with there bmw, just phones dying for like 2 hours) not sure it has anything to do with the car(its working now) but just thought it was weird. anyone else experience something similar?

Im inclinced to believe it has more to do with my phone than the car/ycable, but it was frustrating as shit, could not get the phone to work for nothing for a while.

Y cable came with my car

I keep seeing these posts about buying a y cable. Mine was in a plastic bag with the owner's manual. BTW. you can't extend it with a dock cable extender but you can extend the other ends (USB extender and audio M-F cable. I got both from Amazon. About 12 bucks for both. I have the iPhone in a Ram cup holder mount. The cable is snaked thru the center console.
