Well it is sad that a car build in Germany is way more expensive in Germany than the same car that has to be shipped overseas to the US
Btw. lately most new cars are leased by big corporations, then the average Joe is able to afford a ~2 year old used car. Well one would guess that BMW would react but no: BMW Sales 2013 compared to 2012: USA: +8.1% Germany: -5.8% (Dezember 2013 compared to Dezember 2012: -24.9%(!)) It seems that most of the price difference is in taxes levied by the government moreso than the 'car is more expensive'.
You could basically pick any car and see the huge price difference, not just BMWs. Not completely but isn't it not quite an apples to apples comparison if you add in taxes for other countries but not the US? Sure that MSRP may say $50k, but depending on which state you live in, you could add another 10% in taxes, then whatever other car 'taxes' you end up paying, perhaps a 'property tax' that is levied each year (MS and GA for instance have these and I pay another $700 a year for my car after purchase as long as I own it, going down with the value obviously but still a chunk of change). So that $50k car, you add another $5k in taxes, then another $700 for the first year of what I call property tax for your car and you've paid almost $56k. Obviously not as crazy as other countries though. I'd like to see what the other country prices are without the 'taxes' to compare and see exactly how much of the cars price is taxes. I think some countries like to tax on the size of the engine so a 328 would be taxes significantly less than at 335 even if they were optioned so they cost about the same. The US likes to tax on the value of the car. |

And if we really want to derail, let's compare healthcare services and other 'government' subsidized services to the countries with lower taxes.
I'm willing to bet you sorta get what you pay for when it comes to taxes. |
