According to BMW the 2013 F30 is going to have a new option which will hopefully address this.
Option - Advanced Key Proximity Detection (NAG) (only in conjunction with option 6WA - Full Black Panel Display) Description: If the vehicle detects that the key is not within 15 metres, the following sequence of events is triggered:
This option will be free to all female purchasers

I can also confirm the key gives a visual and audible warning if you take the key outside of the car while it is running. In the morning, I often leave my coffee mug in the kitchen and then remember after starting my car. I run inside the house to grab it and when I get back there is a clear warning displayed on the screen that a key is not detected in the vehicle. Once I sit down and it recognizes the key again it goes away.

OK... so she is about 5'1" tall and the smallish steering wheel plus her seat position makes it so she cannot see the digital layout on the instrument cluster. She's complained about it before and I've told her to adjust the steering column or her seat position. (or perhaps, um drive her own car?) She obviously listens very well! I had the iDrive screen turned off at the moment because, well, I guess I don't like it on all the time.
I tested it last night and found it does give a brief audible tone but only once. I saw the iDrive screen give a warning (when it was turned on) but it won't turn the screen on to do so. Both iDrive and cluster screen are fairly brief, back to business as usual with about 10 seconds. I would prefer it make the iDrive and the screen on the cluster screen keep the emergency information up as long as the car is being driven. The effing key is GONE, that's pretty much an emergency situation to me!!! That being said... I doubt this scenario will be happening again. Where was the other key? Safely on the hook in my home of course! It is MY car. There is no reason for her to keep one of MY keys in one of her seven purses. The key is on the hook when she needs it and when she's done she can replace it. I think I agree with RPM90. I've never asked for a car that didn't have a key. I don't care too much for the oversized fob on the new car. Sure it's a little better looking than the old fob but it's really too large. What really sucks is forgetting every time I drive my wife's car that I need to put a key in it. My how the muscle memory fades so quickly. The start button is cool, but it's so hidden in the F30. Can't see it behind the steering wheel (which is more annoying because the ASS button is attached to it... talk about a button that truly needs a different home!!!... don't get me started on that!!!) The first car I saw the start button on was the Honda S2000. I really liked it's prominence and placement. Not so much on any of the BMW's that have copied it. All this being said. I do like not having to take the key out of my pocket and I do LOVE the car. Keyless entry? Well... I think I could take it or leave it. |

At risk of hijacking thread...
My wife could be a pro demolition driver she is so good at hitting sh/t while going backwards.
Like the OP, my wife is short and I'm not. Is there a fuse that I could pull to prevent the electric seats from adjusting after it is set for me? If she can't reach the gas, she won't hit anything. |
