where the 435i outshines the 911S...
...is low-end grunt. I've owned a 435i for about 6 months now, and have had a 911 of one sort, or the other, for 15 years. My latest is a 997S 6-speed (weekend car) that I bought new in 2007. While the 911 is (way) faster when you really get on it, the 435i is much more effortless at 7/10s - which is where most of us do our spirited driving. The torque peak right off idle really makes the BMW "feel" faster. [The two areas where the Porsche really feels better are brakes and steering.]

Agreed. I use to have a Cayman S PDK, and around town, even my 328 is as torquey and "feels" as fast

Unless your racing or on the track trying to get a good time it doesn't really matter. Might be better actually if you get a speeding ticket, won't be as bad

Go buy a ratty old 89 Honda CRX if you want something that "feels" fast. Take it up to 90 MPH and I promise you're going for the ride of your life.

But seriously, i drove a 550i last week, and that thing FLEW (speedometer wise) i barely felt anything and was at 90 easy. I felt the risk of getting a crazy speeding ticket wasn't worth it since I wasn't getting the full rush of actually speeding.

Noticed the same thing with my 428i vs my Evora, but from a handling perspective.
The BMW is very easy to get through the twisties fast, but the more you push it, the more it rolls and understeers and the more you come out of your seat. The Lotus feels like harder work in everyday driving, but the more you push it, the more it rewards... I once nearly clipped an inside guardrail because my brain anticipated understeer that is obviously not a word in Lotus' vocabulary |

No, the N55 used in the 335i/435i has "300 lb/ft" at 1300-5000 RPM. I put 300 in quotes, because the figure is slightly underrated. Gotta love turbos that provide torque way down low. It's very useful in everyday driving, for quick actions.

Also the car makes 300hp from 6500-6800 rpm if I recall correctly. Most engines just hit peak rpm and fall immediately after that. The N55 hangs in there for a good 300 rpm iirc

This comment most illustrates my point. While my Porsche has nearly as much torque (295 lb-ft), it is much harder to access since it is up at nearly 5,000 rpms. Going around a race track or a mountain pass you can keep it in the proper gear, but on the road you are caught flatfooted in a situation that calls for quick reactions. In everyday driving (and let's face it, that's what we do 99% of the time) 330 lb-ft at 1,250 rpm (I have MPPK), coupled with the excellent 8-speed, is a hard combination to beat.
Many of the posts on this forum reference all-out test results. Sometimes we fail to recognize that real world results are what really matter. And...in the real world, torque almost always wins. Last edited by rickinaz; 11-23-2014 at 04:33 PM.. |

This morning, i took my 435GC out for my first extended thrashing on twisty highways through local wine & river country. The N55 engine paired with the 8speed sport auto is a beautiful thing. I was driving in a slow steady rain and zero traffic ... so 7/10s is about where I kept it, probably never going over 90mph. It was honestly difficult to put the car in a gear/rpm situation where it won't make good power. I was also surprised that (without music) ... the engine makes really nice noises from 5500 - 7000 rpm.

haha oh yes. My friend has a modified s2000; slammed, wheels, loud exhaust. I could swear we were doing 80 on the highway, was actually like 50 something.
