I bought my MPPK from getbmwparts.com, installed my own airbox and engine cover, and made an appt. with my local dealer at the time to get the software update done. Charged 1 hour's labor and all was good. It's not rocket science, but taking it to an independent shop that is not BMW-certified and does not have the "official" BMW computer equipment and connections just isn't going to work. Any dealership can do the install as long as they follow the instructions and have the proper unlock code from the red envelope that is part of the kit. It's not really any different than re-flashing an ECU, which is sometimes done when other mechanical repairs require it (such as replacing a steering-angle sensor or an HPFP on the E9x series).

^yeah I already installed the airbox and engine cover. I just need to have my ECU flashed and some of the dealers wanted 4 hours of labor when I called.
