Does it normally take this long to enter production?

I ordered a 340i on November 29th and it still hasn't gone into the production stage yet. One month seems like a long time with no activity. Anyone else had a similar experience?

Best to ask your saleman what is going on..
Back in the summer mine didnt go production for nearly a month and a half.
I assume you placed an order and received an allocation.. if not you may be waiting on one.
Besides there was talk of delays for orders involving the B58 engine a month ago..
Congrats btw this engine is worth the wait.

If it makes you feel any better my german build order was placed middle of November and the car went into production on the 29th with a completion date of January 5th. There have been zero updates since it entered production but I am hoping that will change in the next few days.

I love my E90 to death but I am really, really, REALLY ready for my 340i

Yeah, the waiting is the hardest part. This is my first bmw, so I'm ready for it to be here.

Did your sales person indicate if the vehicle would be built in Germany or South Africa?

I'm pretty sure it's being built in South Africa.

Is your car RWD? My car was ordered back in early-October 2015 but it didn't go into production until mid-December 2015. I think RWDs get less production allocation so you have to wait your turn... not sure if having manual impacts this as well.

If it's neither, could be due to holidays

Yes, it's RWD. My build looks exactly like yours, except with saddle brown leather. I really love those wheels, and I bet they look even better in person.

Yes they do! I actually got after market wheels for my winter set instead of summer because they already look really great as a summer set. I just need to get some spacers this summer to give it a slightly better stance, not sure how I feel about lowering it right now because of the adaptive suspension... I'll probably cave in the next couple years and lower it though lol.

Unfortunately, you have a bit of a wait ahead of you but it'll all be worth it when you're driving her The wait might not be as long as mine because at the time, my sales guy told me the October & November slots were already full so I would get a December slot. Some other issues popped up (shipping delayed and slight damage at delivery they tried to hide) which further delayed my delivery till end of February 2016... 5 month wait in total.

I'm still waiting on my order to go from a 111 to a 112 I guess. It's being crafted with love in the Munich plant. I've been told my European delivery should be ready at the end of January to mid-February.

I'd prefer more regular updates from my salesman as well. I would think ordering a car would involve making you a part of the process but that doesn't seem to be the case and a little disappointing.

When did you get your production number? It took me 3.5 weeks to get a production number from the dealer, and then 3 more weeks till the car made it out of production. So I ordered my car - 2017, 340i, RWD, SA Build, loaded with everything - on 9/2 and it completed production on 10/17. I still don't have it. I found the process slow at every step, the BMW website useless in terms of status, the BMW 800 number my best option for general information on status, the CA was no better than the 800 number. I figured out the ship it would be on before any of them could tell me. Mine is in the states now. Be ready for a wait....

My last ordered car sat 2 weeks to get on a ship and then another 10 days in Baltimore. Took me 8 weeks from placing order to delivery. I was told last Friday by my CA if I order this week will probably not see car until April. That is on a 4 series with my dealer having no allocation.

I got my production number pretty fast, a few days after I placed the order. So it's been 4 months and you still haven't gotten your car yet?

Mine finally made it to the paint shop today from production starting on the 29th of November. I am fairly sure, that at least if you have a German build, the Munich factory was closed for most of December. You should start seeing progress soon!

I just got it. There is some good tracking info on the post your timelines thread. I have not seen many take as long as mine did. But out of SA, if they quoted you 6-8 weeks, that won't be reasonable. My dealership told me that but then when the allocation came in they said it was SA and that would delay things a FEW weeks. The car is fantastic. Hang in there.

Im just seeing this (I normally post quite a bit at the "other" big bmw site). It sounds like OP has his issue worked out, but for anyone else following this, here is the important information:

When you place an order with a dealer, the first piece of important information is "Do you have an allocation, and if so what week is it for?" An "allocation" is the dealers place in line for the car you are getting. For "regular" cars like 3s 4s 5s and X1/3/5, dealers will have an allocation for a specific week when those cars are being built, and the number of cars they have depends on their volume.

Dealers can modify an in process allocation and assign it to you (priority 1) and change the options on it as long as it not hit a specific stage (which is basically "starting production").

If the dealer does not have an allocation for your model, they will be waiting to place your order till they get it. Your order is not "going anywhere" if they dont have an allocation, its just sitting on the person at the dealership who orders cars desk until they get one.

IF they have an allocation, they should be able to give you a production number. If you dont have a production number, YOUR CAR HAS NOT BEEN ORDERED... Period. Its on someones desk waiting for an allocation. Dealer may be trying to trade another dealer for an allocation, etc etc, but if you dont have a production number your car has not actually been put in the system and ordered.

If you order a car and wait 3-4 weeks for a production number, those 3-4 weeks were spent waiting for the dealer to find an allocation (and thus dont really count toward the actual time to get your car).

If you are ordering a car, push to get a production number... preferrably before you leave the dealership on placing your order.

(I am not a dealer rep or anything at a BMW dealership, just a guy on the net)

Are deposits given to the dealer for ordering or when you actually get a production number?

I put down my deposit the day I ordered and got my production number about 2 weeks later.

This would be a dealer to dealer policy. Many times a deposit is not even required, but this depends on your relationship with the dealer, the dealers policies, AND the overall build and car you are looking at.

If you are getting a "strange" build, you could have a deposit required.. (and strange could be defined as "something the dealer thinks would be hard to sell if you back out", so it could be a really stripper 330 for example, or a fully loaded one.... or an X drive in a market that does not want x Drive sedans (california comes to mind), or a market that wants AWD instead of RWD (colorado comes to mind).

If you dont have a relationship with the dealer, they could require a deposit

If you "feel" to them like you might back out, they might require a deposit.

Dealership could just have a policy of deposits on custom orders etc... but dealership policies can sometimes be worked around too.

Anyway to answer your question, it could be when its ordered, or when you get a production number. If it were ME, I would tell them I would be happy to put down a deposit on my order when they give me the production number (see my other post about production numbers and what not having one means).
