TV’s

I have been fancying a 4K TV for a while and was really thinking that I might as well wait for OLED ones to come down to a reasonable price, so I noticed the LG OLED55B7V went down from £1800 to £1600 in Currys on Black Friday, then after that they went down £1500, so I was thinking great they’ll be down to near £1k in a few more months and I’ll probably grab one! But now they’re back up to £1800!

So is it worth me continuing to wait or should I just go for an LED one like the Sony KD-55XE8596 for £879?

Thats a bummer. Tis a shame because the LG model I have (2016 OLED 4K curved) went from £1900 to about £1300 but fully discontinued mid-late last year. If you can, wait for a good priced OLED because the quality is exceptional. You may find that last years models still on sale will drop in the second quarter as the new new models are released. Used to be a Samsung and Sony chap but love the LGs now. Good software and really easy to use all the features.

Yes I see that the C8 is “coming soon”, so maybe I can get a bargain on a C7 then.

They tend to slash the price of the outgoing model quite a bit to move the stock but in reality, not a huge amount of difference in new to old models apart from cosmetics (unless there is some revolutionary new tech involved).

And to my mind, wait for better tech and spec to come down in price on an older model than buy lower spec now. I think mine will keep me going and satisfied for at least 4-5 years. If I'd bought lower spec, I'd just want to change it sooner.

Whats your budget?

Got a Sony 65 in OLED just before Christmas. Great TV. The OLED screen is LG (as they own the patent) but the tech inside is Sony. Has a built in speaker that acts like a stand. Got it on a deal... but as USD not really relevant. They're expensive but the picture is fantastic. Of course then you need a 4K Blu-ray and any streaming to be 4K!

I was after a tv in Jan last year too... went to richersounds and advised that i wait till easter as the outgoing model will be replaced and they will need to shift the stock.....

In the end I got my 65” LG OLED for £2500 in May (had to ring a store 50 miles away and get them to deliver it) the same mode was £3900 in Jan!

And comes with 6yr warranty!

Get an oled. Man maths it, spend a couple of hundred quid more than you wanted and then amortise it over life of tv. Sound familiar?

Models are usually changed around April so not too long to wait for the new models, this years models should be reduced fairly soon to make way nor the new stock. If you're a Costco member they have good prices and include a 5 year warranty.

CES was a couple of weeks back, LG, Samsung etc showcased their new tech.

It usually takes around 2 months for these to hit the shops (unless previously released).

I spent a fair bit of time at LG in Korea last year and was very impressed, I am now very much in the LG camp.

They are really pushing technology.

It's always hard deciding when to jump on the technology rollercoaster.

I could stomach paying just over £1k, but £1500-£2k is just a bit silly for a TV imo.

Teaspoon, if youre able to afford a few hundred quid on your budget, the £1300-1400 area gets you last years £2000 model. If you spend £1000, youll end up wanting a better one sooner. Man maths at its best

Teaston, you spent £800 for HUD which gives you a low resolution , 2 inch duplication of what you already have.....that only you can see....a must have apparently....and you struggle with a reaching into your pockets for 55 inch high resolution TV that the whole family can enjoy? Ironic, and man maths gone mad

HUD was only £500 (£1500 for pro media plus vs £1k for pro media) minus discount so actually around £400. And spread over 48 months, I want to spread the TV over 24 months max.

Looking at the Samsung MU7000 at under £800 it has really good reviews! Of course an OLED would be better, but double the price better?! :

I had a Samsung 65" curve... got led bleed in less than 2 years. Samsung have frame issues too, caused by too many models. We got the OLED based on a warranty on the Samsung paying 70% of the cost. I would go LG.

That's an old tv though, surely they've improved since then?

They're worst. It is a 2 year old tv. Purchased in Dec 2015. It's they're 9000 model as well.

It's your choice I would read up on some reviews.

They have some motion processing issues. Chip creates a stutter that Panasonic haven't been able to fully rectify as far as I know.

Could depend on whether you always reply on a separate TV box (i.e. Sky BT etc to feed the signal) I saw an article about a month ago saying that the spec for DAB 4k HD broadcasts was not decided so any inbuilt tuner may not work when they arrive.

OLED is the future but until Sharp just started production, LG was the only manufacturer supplying the screens for other brands. The new competition could mean prices may lower.
