My last 4-banger was the Mitsubish Eclipse Turbo; I had the Toyota MR2 Turbo too, as well as Celica GTS. I graduated to Supra I6, and have never looked back. I got into BMWs nd my love affair with 6 cylinders just grew and grew. I don't think I want a 4-banger ever again if at all I can help it.

I'm sure an exhaust (muffler) will make the 328 sound great! I'm sure all the exhaust tuners will be on it.

The 328i sounds better than the old 316i did. That being said it does still remind me of a leaf blower... on steroids.

That being said the exhaust noise from both is pretty nice.

One thing I don't like is how bad the engines soundn. On my 325i it is the engine that creates most of the noise, and the exhaust just adds a slight rasp to it. Must be the turbos that kill it.

Love the 335i exhaust!

Thanks for putting into words what i love but was having a hard time describing! LOVE THE BURBLE of the 335i!

I hope you were being sarcastic. Am in Burble heaven... and i thought my E36 328i was doing something wrong... it even has a touch of burble after a hot/warm lap... on stock/original pipes!

It's not new, but i am happy they kept it with the F30 I-6.

@ 3:30

Is the left exhaust tip hanging more low than the right?

The cross plane crankshaft in a M3 V8 makes it sound weird sometimes, I prefer an inline 6(E46 M3, N52) for that matter, and having had such a M3 V8 for two years.
Not that spectacular imo, sometimes a Nascar when cold, nice, sometimes just boring(just like Nascar) and annoying imo.

The //M V8 should have been a flat plane crankshaft design , like the Ferrari V8s.

No not a big fan of the M V8 here, by experience....

You want a nice sounding competitor? C 63 AMG engine sounds ten times better than the M3 V8 imho.

But would you say that the sound of the c63 is just plain loud and would get annoying on a longer drive?

Well, inside the C63: it sounded wonderful. Less 'annoying'(subjective I know) than the M V8 on longer trips imo.....

The 335i predictably sounds sexier than the 328i, but the latter definitely doesn't sound bad. In fact, I'd say it's one of the better-sounding 4-cylinders I've heard. And damn, a lot of N20 haters in this thread!

I do love that you can actually hear the bypass valves on both engines. You might even be able to hear the turbochargers when the engines are under load and actually developing boost. I don't know why manufacturers insist on covering up compressor whine on the newer turbocharged engines. If you ask me, compressor whine is one of the allures of turbocharged engines!

The wonky exhaust setup of the X5/X6 //M cars was supposed to mimic that sound I think... but instead BMW managed to make a V8 sound like a 4-banger.

They got it a bit better in the new M5, but I still think the stock exhaust doesn't hold a candle to the stock E9X M3 sound.

They all sound better than the steaming pile of ass that was the E46 M3 factory exhaust.

I agree!

My 335is just take it out dead cold and let off and it just rips some very loud popping burbles. Flames would be nice with the sound

The new 335i almost sounds like my 335is.

I have driven a 528i loaner for a week that had the N20........sick. Seriously, BMW has done it again. So smooth, powr delivery is great, engine revs freely, and its got some REAL get up and go, and has plenty of power even at 80mph. Bottom line, you would not know its not an inline-6 if you weren't told or REALLY paid attention to every little detail-----even then it would be tough.

Cheers,

I am addicted to the 335i now...
but i have to give a hand and two thumbs up to BMW for giving us such a banging 4!

Having been impressed by Hyundai Sonata's Turbo 4, i can't wait to compare it with the 328i 8AT.

Car Mags ought to take all the best turbo 4 cylinders on the market (accross the board) and tell us which one is the very best, and where does the BMW N20 situated on that scale!

But currently based on BP and Jasons' treat to us, all i can say is the N20 sound as good as Honda's best 4s if not better .

(am just happy that i will finally be making the jump to the 335i)

I think eisenmann exhaust will fix the sound of 328i engine, just look at this video: Golf VI R 4 Cylinder engine (1,984 cc I4 (CDL))
