New York Tint

The dealer told me I could pick up my car next week, so I already called the tint shop to set up an appointment.

Then I find out that New York law is 70%. Wha?

I wasn't planning on going crazy – just 35% in the back and on the side windows. The car is black on black as it is...

Is anybody having any problems with 35% on Long Island or anywhere in New York?

I think you should be fine, I'm in New York State, and by law you should be able to go down to 30% tinting which would allow for 70 percent of light to pass.

All I can say is, here in the hood tinting gets so deep you can't even see through the window. However, I would be cautious on Long Island, I've heard of police being less lenient of this than in the inner city.

Hope you find a happy medium. Let's here from some other NYC/New York State folks.

30% tint only allows 30% of light to pass.
tint and the law refer to visible light transmittance or VTL. NYS VTL is 70%
30% tint, coupled with the light tint in the glass, will only allow 25% or so to pass.

knock on wood, but i havent had an issue since my S60R, where i got two tint tickets instead of a speeding ticket.
just be smart, roll down your windows for checkpoints, and dont go too dark. if you get pulled over, roll down all windows and turn on the interior lights.

I had 35% tint on E92 and have 20% (asked for 35% but by accident they put 20%) on F30. They don't stop you specifically for tints. If they do, no matter what you have below 70%, it is a ticket, and 70% isn't really worth having at all to my mind. Ticket is $50 too, more or less affordable in the worst case scenario

I have 35% all around on a jet black car with black interior. I commute about 40 miles per day in Suffolk, occasionally into Manhattan. I have had no issues whatsoever. If a cop is near me, sometimes I get paranoid and pull back the sunroof shade. But they generally pay no attention. Unless youre driving like an ass, I dont think you will be hassled for the tint.

My bad, guess I've always confused it.

Don't go crazy and you should be fine. I personally had two vehicles that were already tinted (both bought in SC), which allows for 27% tinting. Mine weren't that dark for South Carolina standards but definitely darker than New York State spec without issue.

Depends where you are in NY.

My last car to get tints was my Lexus GS. I used to get pulled over almost daily just for tints and i spent lots of $$$$$$$$$, so since then no more tint.

One cop gave me a ticket for EACH one of my windows - that was about $300 altogether just that one time.
