New rear brakes at 19000 Kms??
Anyone having this issue. Dealer says my rear brakes on my 2014 328d xDrive are at 3m and need replacing. The car only has 19000 Kms! I told them that was insane as I truly do not drive the car hard. I have had many BMWs and never had to replace tear brakes before 60000 Kms. What's up. Is there a flaw with this car? They are saying it is caused by the traction control on the xDrive and all the harsh winter. That may indeed create more wear, but 19000 Kms. That is ridiculous

Have them measure how many mm is left in the pads. I had the same problem. Initially, all they did was go by the car's computer. As soon as they measured the pad, they told me it is fine and they will just reset the computer.

That sounds very odd. I have a 2012 X1 (I HATE this vehicle, but that's another story) and am at 54,000 km. The indicator says the rear brakes need servicing in 7,000 kms. I am actually going in to get the brakes checked tomorrow, since they really feel like they need new pads. But 19,000 kms is crazy. Something unusual must be causing that kind of early wear.

There is much more rear brake intervention these days across the models. Many report rear brakes wearing down well ahead of previous models. E9x models could be the same. Many drivers in the UK have been wearing off the rears much faster than the front pads.
Traction control and DSC do use braking to control functions. My F11 5-series RWD is using much more rear brake pad than any previous BMW. In fact I know it must be rear brake bias or intervention, as the front discs hardly show any wear at all. My driving uses very little braking, but rear discs show plenty of use. If the garage have measured them, then there is the wear. Some users have wrong CBS information, pad thickness doesn't reflect the mileage to a change. Whether BMW can recalibrate the braking bias and intervention is a question worth asking. HighlandPete |

Agree, the rear brake do use faster than the front.
Partly because of all the "features" in the car using them. One of them being the cruise control, when you pull on the lever harder (past the 2nd indent) where the car decelerate by 10mph. If you look carefully in your rear view mirror, the brake light are activated. This feature, even if it's soooo nice, uses the rear brake exclusively. Quote:
Got rid of it after purchasing it new, and owning it for a veeeeeeery long 7 months. Couldn't stand it.

Yep, cruise control generally seems to be a bad idea (fuel economy as well as brake wear). I think I'm moving away from BMW altogether and getting a Land Rover LR4.

You may just need a software update. I had a similar issue where the car was calling for rather early rear brake service (if I remember correctly it was showing rear brake service would be due in 12,000km and the car had about 20,000km at the time). I mentioned it when the car was in for an oil change and they mentioned there was a software update for the car. Once that was done the rear brake service due changed to much more reasonable interval (my car is now at about 30,000km and the CBS shows rear brake service is due in another 36,000km).

I went through the same as the OP but not as quick. I just replaced my rear pads and rotors at 30000KM which is ridiculous in my mind. Service guy told me the exact same thing about the traction control kicking in, which makes no sense cause it's probably kicked in a couple dozen times in 2 years due to snow. My car is not an Xdrive.
Also after brand new pads being installed my onboard computer said I had 15000 KM left on them?!?! which makes zero sense. |

you guys know that that doesn't actually show you how when you ACTUALLY need to change it but when the system on average says you need to change them. Go to a non-dealer and have them check it manually this is especially easy if your doing a change over for summers from winters or vice versa. Don't trust the stealership or your dash thats full of mis information.

In my case, the dealership was pretty honest. My indicator shows 7,000 km until the rears need replacing. Dealership inspected the brakes and said that both front and rear are at 10mm, so plenty of life left in them and no need to change them before my lease is up in July.

Same here. Once, my front brakes showed something like 13k left to change. I went in for an oil service and I guess they measured/recalibrated pad sensors and now it shows something like another 30k?

Back to this topic... I have had 3 BMW. None of them has this problem. But my buddy's 2012 335i has the same headache.... Yet he bought it as a demo. So he put the blame to all the demo's drivers |
