Hey Bimmers,

I have always heard that when a car is brand new it requires a push in order to establish good performance, I don't know if its a myth or reality but what I have heard and also done to my first car was in the first 600Miles a car requires a good push on acceleration to increase it's performance which doesn't mean that I need to go fast on it, but rather in each stop to move forward give it the gas a good push to establish good future performance where the engine gets more power. I might be wrong or what I heard is just a myth and I would like your opinion

I think the most important thing is to follow the recommendations in the manual - they should know. Most importantly, don't load the engine up too much - avoid full throttle acceleration and letting it bog down in too high a gear (assuming it's a manual). Also, new tyres need running in for about 200 miles, so avoid heavy braking, acceleration, and cornering for that period.

This is all my opinion and I know this is a contentious area, so someone will probably be along to tell you something different. Having said that, I've done this with all of my new cars, and over 5 BMWs in the last 20 odd years I've never had an engine or transmission problem.

Truth be told, I didn't know what this was either until I read this.

I guess you have to find a long stretch of desolate road to do this on. I'm just over the 1000 mile mark on mine. Wonder if I can still do this, or is it too late?

OP - I have been following the instruction's break-in method, and from what I've noticed, the engine has really started to "wake up" as I'm nearing the end of the initial break-in. The engine feels like it's starting to pull better and more smoothly just under normal driving, even more so when I give it a bit more gas to get it into the 4000rpm range. My opinion, from what I'm experiencing, would be to stick with what the instructions say.
