New Key Fob Programming

I just bought a 2014 BMW 328i and it only came with one key fob. I ordered a new key from the BMW dealership and received it the other day.

The dealership told me to program the new key I just needed to hold the key up to the steering column in the designated area and start the car.

I have tried this multiple times both with and without a working key in the car. The car still wont recognize the new key. The new key buttons wont unlock or lock the car either.

The metal key in the fob does unlock the doors, so I believe the key was ordered correctly.

Anyone have any clues on how to get my car to recognize the new key? Do I need to have the dealership program it for me?

There was some confusion when I ordered the key as to whether it could be programmed by holding it up to the steering column or if I needed to have the service department do it.

I'd like to avoid paying the fee to have the dealership do the programming because it will cost over $100.

+1. You won't have to look too far, I've seen the correct procedure posted here.

If googling for possible solution doesn't help, then I'm afraid you'll have to go to the stealership and assume position.

I have tried all the methods that I could find on Google.

Basic steps below:
1. Unlock car
2. Get in car with both old and new keys
3. Hold new key to the steering wheel
4. Hold brake and press start/stop
5. Car starts but I get no prompt for the new FOB and the new FOB does not unlock doors or start car on its own

Process 2
1. Unlock car
2. Get in car with only new key fob
3. Hold keyfob to steering column
4. Hold brake and press start/stop
5. Car does not start and shows message on KOMBI indicating no key FOB found

If you ordered it from the dealer they should code the key for you and cut the inside key same as ur original key.

As mine only had one key and I did the same, luckily the seller paid for the other key as they lost it.

Here is a video or setting up a new FOB. I have read that if one key is lost, the dealer may have to deactivate it in the onboard system. I am not sure if that is true or not. Hopefully this video helps.
