Squealing Brakes Poll
I wanted to see if the squealing brakes was an M-Sport thing or if the non-m sport pads were squealing too.
My M Sport has been squealing since day one. It's not as irritating as my E92 where it would screech after letting off the brake at least...

My brakes squealed once - when I accidentally left the parking brake engaged when I drove forward a few feet. All other times the brakes have been quieter than a mouse. This is on a Sport Line.
I wonder if its a feature BMW implemented to warn drivers they've left their parking brake engaged, and the feature is showing itself under normal braking sometimes? Could it be that the dealer in Roki's instance did something to the parking brake, some sort of adjustment, to make the noise not happen during normal braking? |

Brake dust on the M Sport is extreme. I was hoping it will get better after a while.

Don't count on it - the Eurospec pads on the M Sport are very dusty. Just keep a rag in the car and enjoy the extra bite when you press the whoa pedal

I can't select two options. I can make them squeal, I can make them not squeal.
pedal pressure people! wheel wax is great for the dust.

Picked up my 328 M Sport last Friday, and have very significant squealing/screeching from the brakes. Seems to only happen under light braking at low speed (10mph and lower mostly). Have an appointment with service on Thursday. Really, really annoying. My shiny new BMW sounds like a 30 year old Oldsmobile with bad brake pads.

FWIW back when I did this for a living the usual treatment was to lightly sand the glaze off the pads. Then you can treat the pads with a BG product called "brake quiet"(I'm sure there are other brands as well). it soaks into the pads and makes them less noisy for a bit. Also clean and relube all the contact points to make sure those aren't causing the issue. Then we'd bed the pads ourselves. generally with this treatment on a non-terrible pad would fix any squeaks/groans/rattles.
on a new car, you can try to bed the brakes again, see if that will fix the problem. It may/may not. Often times it's the driver that causes the squeals. (no, not you....just all the other people who have the issue). my .02, It's worth what you paid for it.

4,500 miles and not a single sound from the brakes. Wish the 328i had a little better brakes and a little more sensitive pedal, there's a dead zone right at the top, but once you're used to it, it's fine.

You aren't the first poster to suggest that the squealing brakes might be due to my braking technique. Although this reminds me an awful lot of Apple's reassurances that people were just holding their iPhone wrong when it would drop calls, I am hopeful you might elaborate. Am I not supposed to brake lightly when I'm slowly inching forward at stoplights? I feel like on a $50k+ performance/luxury car, I shouldn't have to tailor my braking to prevent squealing (i.e., slam on brakes in stop/go traffic). Am I wrong?

1200 miles and no squealing on my non-Sport...brake pads make a huge difference in noise.

My 335i brakes don't squeal.
There is too much brake travel before bite for my liking, and then too much pedal travel instead of just pressure for more braking, and the pedal makes a very loud THUNK when I release it quickly to get back on throttle, but no squeal. Oh, and it feels like the system needs to be bled even though there's only 1900 miles on them. The pedal feels too soft and a little mushy. Too bad really, cause they don't feel very BMW like. My former E46 325i sport and 135i felt better. Brake dust is as bad, or good, as my 135i with Brembo's. It seems the 135i and F30 Msports use the same pad material. 135i had lots of brake dust just like my 335i Msport. Brake feel and overall operation was a good bit better in my 135i. Those of you how have squeal, did you 'bed' your brakes within a day or two when new? I bed new brakes ALWAYS, whether a new car or freshly installed new rotors and pads. If you're mechanically inclined, you can see if there is an anti squeal shim kit available and install it, which may not be likely as these are fairly new. Or, you can get some high temp black grease and apply a light coating to the OUTSIDE of the pad, the side that does NOT touch the rotor. The grease acts as a damper to quell the vibration caused by braking that sets up the squeal sound. Works great. Just make sure and positive that you do NOT get any grease on the actual pad side. If you can do this yourself, ask your tech to do it for you. While you or your mechanic are in there anyway, take some sanding to the rotor and brake pad to remove any residue build up. Once it's all back together, the first thing you should do is a bedding procedure. Look on line for a few suggestions, they all work pretty well. Tire Rack lists some as well. Read up on a few procedures to get an idea of what needs to be done, and then do it. |

2500 miles and still squealing on my M-Sport. Will be taking it in to the dealer within the next two weeks.
