Does cruise control braking activate brake lights?

I've noticed when using cruise control and going down a hill the car does a great job of maintaining the set speed. I am assuming it's using the brakes, because there's no evidence of engine braking/increased RPM. My question though is, going down a long steep hill just maintaining speed, do the people behind me think I'm that idiot riding my brakes all the way down? Or does it do it without activating the brake lights?

During braking, yes on the light, during coasting, no.

Just to add to this that when you adjust your cruise speed down in small increments, it will not activate the brake lights. But when you hold down the control for quick deceleration it will - sorry if I'm Capt. Obvious

Yes, when you feel the car braking the brake lights are lit along with the brake application.

I'd certainly hope they'd light up, lmao. That's an auto collision lawsuit otherwise.

On this subject ... what do people think of using the active cruise control on long, steep descents on the mountains? Can it be trusted to not "ride" the brakes constantly?

Yes, they light up. I have a dark hill that I usually have my CC on when I get to that the speed limit goes from 50 to 40 to 35 in a short distance. As far back as my '07 E92 you can see the glow in the mirror when decelerating using the CC.
