Just phoned DVLA main number this morning. They've also said the best thing is to put it on retention and give the retention doc to the dealer as soon as I have it.

Apparently the majority of new car dealers now use an online system to register a new car (inc. with a retention doc) and then they're instantly able to use that reg and they print a tax disc out at the dealer; saves them having to physically go down to the DVLA office, and also avoids any delays, and the initial registration of the car will be on my reg (so no transfers etc.)

So, all sounds good

Thanks for the help guys!

Result. That's the same method I've used to help things along. Just hope the retention cert turns up before the car now as everything seems to be moving so quickly

Sent the forms off last Thursday so hopefully I'll hear something this week. Build week is next week (49) then probably 2 weeks til it gets to the dealer, so hopefully I'll just about receive the new V5 and retention doc in time

Mine came in the following order:

Tax disc and "new" plate for old car - 2 days from posting
V5 - end of the week (5 days)
Retention cert - Saturday morning (6 days)

So you guys should be fine on times

Haven't heard anything yet and I sent the form off last Thursday, you guys seem to have got something back a lot quicker! Is it 2 weeks it's meant to be to receive the first letter back?

Yeah I did wonder, maybe not too many changes going on up here?

Perhaps worth checking the registered post to make sure they signed for it when you expected them to have it

Just got the new tax disc and letter allowing me to put the old plates back on, today So just over a week from sending the form off.

Just need the retention document now, anyone know how long that usually takes to arrive after this initial letter? V5C showing the old reg will hopefully arrive before I get the new car, but I'm sure the garage won't mind (part-ex), I can forward it to them as soon as I get it if it's a bit late...

My retention doc was as above, around 3 working days behind the tax disc as it has to come from Swansea not the local office

Cheers, good news. I always enjoy putting the 'old' plates back on the car, makes me feel even more like I'm getting a new one then!

The DVLA would , it's money for nothing.
Let the dealer change it over, £80.00 end off.

Didn't trust the dealer to do all the docs and not cause any delays to be honest, they've been incompetent and unaccommodating so far, to say the least! For £25 I'm happy to maintain more control and give me peace of mind that there won't be any delays with the reg

It's £80 for the dealer (or yourself) to do the transfer, or £105 for a year's retention (inc. transfer within that year), so I chose the latter as I didn't trust my dealer unfortunately, though that would have been the easier option

Yea I can see your point now Mark, for the extra it would be worth doing what you've done mate, I will remember that come change time.

Haha no worries; my experience of BMW salespeople hasn't been great to be honest on any of my cars: always need chasing, no sense of urgency or appreciation, rarely forthcoming with updates, making mistakes on the spec, don't really know much about the options, or the actual production process (yesterday I was told by the Business Manager that I 'couldn't have the VIN yet as they don't get it until the car lands in the UK‘, despite his colleague giving me said VIN a few hours before (which we all know is assigned before actual production starts, and is readily available from BMW AG))! I also had a car that they 'forgot to order' for 3 weeks a couple of years ago, delaying the delivery by a month. Few things like that that haven't given me much confidence in them, so if at all possible I prefer to do things myself; keeps me occupied during the painful wait, at the very least, anyway Obviously all dealers won't be like that, and some will be great - all down to the specific salesperson really - but that's been my experience with 3 different dealers I've bought cars from near me before, though the 4th I'll admit was very good.
