Rubber floats, right? Jump inside them and jump over the Niagara Falls. You'll be protected and eventually end up on the Canadian side. Problem solved.

just make em look older, like scuff up the sidewalls a bit and remove the paint marks. are they really gonna hassle you, and have to figure out where you bought them and all that shit. seems like a lot for them paper wise to have to prove you guilty

Buy two each time and stay the two days. You can smuggle plenty but tires and wheels are huge and obvious. Sounds like more of a risk than its worth.

+1 to this. There's nothing like the feeling of being truthful and sleeping well at night.

Or be like my Canadian buddy who stores his other set of wheels in my garage and swaps them two times a year. That way you're technically not importing anything into Canada.. I don't see a problem with that.. :dunno:

Or move to the South and say goodbye to winter tires.

On second thought, our traffic is already bad, please don't.

You tell them you bought the tires only, but brought the rims over from Canada. That way your $800 exemption should cover the rubber.

Burden of proof is on the importer. You as the importer have to prove where they came from, and that duty and tax has been paid in Canada. If you're unable to satisfy the Officer as to their status, they're not coming in to the country until they're satisfied duty and tax has been paid.

And you're still subject to seizure.

To me this seems like a no-brainer. Particularly if you cross the border with any sort of frequency.

But when crossing the boarder they ask if you purchased anything in US i then say no and what if they then decide to search the car?
Then they see 4 used summer tires and they check tires on the car, will they just tell me to pay tax and duty or am i in more trouble for lieing?
Just tell them the truth and take your chances on paying the tax. Good luck
cheers

Just had snow tires put on and NOPE. They wont' all fit in the trunk. In fact, only two fit in the trunk. I had them bag them and put the other two in the back seat.

What is the tax at customs vs shipping the tires back? You can still save close to $1000 if you just ups the summer set back to you lol.

You can order the tires through Tire Rack for instance and ship to a post box in Niagara Falls NY. ( 5 min. from the border) I know someone who shipped a washer dryer combo from Texas and did this. This service is readily available for a nominal fee. Website is cbiusa.com I think. You save state tax by doing this. Either stay 48 hours to save some Canadian tax or just declare the tires and have them mounted in Canada.

Duty and taxes are the same regardless if you ship or hand-carry, but if you hand-carry you get an $800 exemption if you've stayed in the US for 48 hours or more.

hey I ordered tires from tire rack. I had them shipped to the kinek point at the border. I payed kinek $20 to give me my tires and threw them in my van. When I came to the border I said I had only purchased $200 worth of stuff. I had some old receipts and gave them those. Paid $40 duty on $1400. They wont say anything I could have said I bought nothing or doctor the tire rack online invoice i printed either way they have no clue.

Yeah because how would they be able to see the actual TireRack price. I mean it's not like they could just go on-line and get the price.

Oh wait...

This is EXACTLY what they do. You were lucky, nothing more.

But you would be shipping yourself the used the tires. Would they make you pay on that? Say you bought a used set of tires from another forum member. Would you have to pay duty?

Just order tires off Tirerack to your house and have them mounted and balanced locally. Problem solved and probably cheaper.

Yeah, It is border fraud which has a serious penalty. Not worth it.

Just pay the duty, you are still saving. They can confiscate your car.
