Would you recommend it for a car with high-ish mileage?

No reason why not, just keep an eye on the timing chain as you would on a non-tuned engine.

Timing chains can play up from as low as 35-40k miles, starting with a rattle or a VANOS error as the cam and crank sensors go out of sync. Once rattling a new tensioner will help, but is only delaying the inevitable and by 80k I'd be thinking about putting a new chain in. Not a big job and good insurance for the future. As long as the engine's quiet and running well though you're good to go.

Hi there Lorcan
I have a 328i with 82K on the clock, should I be thinking of a timing chain replacement? is it pricey?
Thanks in advance

As long as the engine is quiet, runs well and has no errors I wouldn't worry about it overly much, just bear it in mind. They can last well past 100k. But if it's rattling, sluggish or throwing any errors relating to the valve train then don't mess about, get the chain replaced. You're looking at £400ish for parts and labour at a good independent.

Thanks for the info Lorcan i have been worrying about the chain since you mentioned it in another post but that info helps a lot . Mine has done 28K but you still worry especially since BMW know there is an issue with early N20 chain and guides and have modified the guides on the replacement kit .
