Selling Modified and Stock

Has anyone had success selling their car modified (from minimal to heavy)? vs. returning it completely stock, then selling. Any and all situations welcome, I'm curious how the modded cars sell if at all (especially those with turbo upgrade). Thanks

In my experience you will always get more if you can take the parts off the car and sell them separately.

I can only talk as e "buyer" - I would never buy a modified car (excl. BMW original modifications, such a MPPSK of course).
Not just engine mods, but styling mods, especially with non-original parts.

Yes - I sold my 2007 335i coupe with full Dinan S3 (software, intake, exhaust, oil cooler, intercooler), aftermarket wheels & tires, and custom coding to a fellow BMW enthusiast for $4K more than what the dealer offered me. It was 5 years old at the time with 42K miles. While I did have to pay more in sales tax, it still gave me a significant advantage over a trade on my current 2013 335i. Since I couldn't "transfer" the S3 software and I had already sold the other components (except the stock exhaust), it was the best choice.

Part out. I've encountered so many sellers that think that because they have x amount of add-one/upgrades that it somehow increases the value of the car. No. A modified car is only worth the sellers price if someone is looking for the car with those specific upgrades.

The dealer will always pay less vs private party, so it's no big surprise that you were able to get more. Given the right person, you CAN get a little more keeping your mods on, but in most other cases, it's better to return to stock and sell the parts.

Return to stock and sell .....

Rule of thumb for used cars is that modified brings zero additional value and often times will decrease value compared to stock. There are, of course, exceptions to the rule, such as you find the "right" buyer (i.e. same taste), or the modification is a fairly high end item. But for most cars, most of the time, modifications will not raise value of car.

As noted you won't get consideration for mods of any kind, general rule. Especially if you're going to use the car as a trade-in.

Part out. This is kind of obvious, but if you need to pay someone to uninstall something, weigh the labor cost against the selling value of the part.

Agreed with the above, part out so long as you can do the labor. Otherwise it’s a wash.
