Bootmod3 multiple knocks and very high boost in low rpm.

Flash bm3 on a 20i engine with PWG. Multiple issues and not so impressed.

I did a half throttle pull at freeway speed in high gear and found the boost to be really high for low rpm. The pull was kinda like how one will drive when trying to accelerate sanely. My log below...

http://www.bootmod3.net/log?id=5de837c1c090c66e290b42d5

Does the boost target look correct or too high? I mean 14-16psi at 1500+rpm sounds excessive and make the car drives not so bmwish. Is the AFR looking lean?

And for some reason, my logging shows gear 6 for gear 6 to 8. Also, the car is very often stuck in gear 7/8 under high load condition and low speed (1200-1400rpm) causing big vibration like lugging the the engine.

At WOT, my 2nd gear pull shows a lot of knocking:

http://www.bootmod3.net/log?id=5de83764c090c66e290b42d2

And my "drive around" log shows seemingly lean runs and some knocks too.

http://www.bootmod3.net/log?id=5dea0b54c090c66ee9324f97

Common sense tells me I should flash back to stock first- correct?

My 528i slightly better. No knock when doing WOT. But I get knock during partial load. Going to install Wagner intercooler clone soon hopefully will resolved the knock issue. I suspect either our ambient temp too high or fuel quality sucks. I'm using RON 97 for Oct 91 stage 1 tuning. Tested both Petronas and Caltex same problem. When I flash to stock, I also detected knock during partial load.

I recommend contacting PTF direct, and send them full datalogs not screenshots

you should tell us what stage you're running and do you have all the supporting mods plus what octane gas are you using?

Where did you get your intercooler? Will be interesting if you can share your results after the intercooler change.

Search at Aliexpress for MERTOP F10 520i 528i intercooler. I check the design and it's the same as Wagner Competition F10 intercooler. Just got it install today and I'll do a log tomorrow on highway. Will let you know if this solve the knocking issue.

Manage to do few logs here today on normal road. Knock is still detected. In fact, when I looked at IAT, it seems that the temperature is higher than stock intercooler for normal town driving. Only when I do a hard pull, I can see the temperature start to drop immediately.

I read some thread before that bigger intercooler is more prone to heat soak during slow town driving and stop at traffic light. Looks like if you mostly drive below 70km/h in city driving, then don't bother to upgrade. The graph show an interesting trend. Once the car moving above 80km/h, IAT will improved compare to stock intercooler. Will try to capture another log while cruising at 110 km/h and above.

IMHO the tune is way too aggressive if "around town intercooler heatsoak" is enough to trigger engine knock.

The knock normally only detected when driving in partial load under low boost. If I go WOT, no knock is detected even when boost is hitting 19psi. So I'm not sure if this is fuel quality.

Your gas are poor and IAT is very high. Where do you live?
You may try ACN 91 which should be more suitable for your gas.

I’m from Malaysia. Always hot here normally around 32 degree Celsius at noon. Where to get ACN tune? I don’t see that option. Currently using RON 97, will try out RON 100 but it's not convenience as only few petrol station selling RON 100 plus more expensive. Other option is to try out Octane Booster.

Are you b48 engine or N20?
If you can add octane booster, it should be better.
Or you can add a bigger intercooler

N20. Don’t think bigger intercooler would help. Will try out octane booster.

Further research show no 4 most likely is my problem.

4. Due to the low speed of engine: Due to low engine speed, there is a sufficient ignition lag, which gives enough time for a secondary flame front to get formed leading to the knocking.
If the speed of the engine is increased sufficiently, this issue can be resolved. Another alternative can be "advancing the spark timing". This will reduce the ignition lag and hence the knocking.
5. Knocking characteristics of the fuel: The fuel to be used in the engine should be tested for it knocking characteristics (octane rating) in a standard engine setup and a good quality antiknocking fuel should be used in order to get rid of this issue.

Does ACN91 reduce boost or timing?

Did a WOT gear 3 again after flashing the OTS 91 map agon...seems like my timing is all over the place and engine is running really rich. Any idea if it is suppose to run like this?

It had good and consistent timing on stock map.

your AFR ratio looks very rich. The timing on this log looks better than previous log tho. Would very like to know what PTF says about them.

This is my logs. http://www.bootmod3.net/log?id=5df0f939ae729b43107e1432 but Imy engine is B48 instead.
I did have slightly timing issue when using 93OCT map even with 98RON fuel here. Changing to 91OCT map and still using my local 98RON fuel makes timing much more consistent.

Hi, continuing this thread. I too i think suffer from the same thing as you. I too from Malaysia, been using Ron97 on my stage 2 520i and i get knock at partial load or during tip in. Hard throttle seems to be fine which is weird. Do you find out the issue? I too had a wagner IC clone and IAT werent even that hot when knock occur (Guess around 40C). I already changed new plugs, new coils too. Dont think is the tune else knock will be consistent. Any ideas?
